Gender equality with Insurance

Did a law not come in a few years ago to make women insurance the same price as men's? Got quotes for me and partner this morning and we are baffeled.. Here they are..

    23 year old female
    Full license for 2 months
    No previous insurance
    1600euros

    28 year old male
    Full license 7 years
    No previous insurance
    2400 euros

Both on a 1.9 TDI Jetta

How is it that the younger person with a licence only 2 months is almost 1000 euros cheaper?

You can't do anything because the insurance company will say that 28 year olds crash 1.9 TDI Jettas more often than 23 year olds :)

I don't see how its lower risk, a 23 year old who just passed her test v a 28 year old who passed his test years ago and has 2 years driving experience but that was a few years ago. They said he has to start off fresh as no claims only last 2 years.

Did such an equaity law come in or is it just being ignored?

What's the like for like comparison ??

23 year old female vs 23 year old male
    Full license for 2 months
    No previous insurance

28 year old female vs 28 year old male
    Full license 7 years
    No previous insurance
    2400 euros

It's just being ignored. Really not sure how the women-only insurance companies could operate otherwise.

Change the sex for the exact same circumstances and the quote should be the same

Go back to the same site; put in the same details but change the sex of the 23 year old female to male and leave the rest the same. If you get the same quote then there's your answer.

When i worked in an insurance company doing quotes , i went through a full quote with a young lad and got his price etc. He had cheaper elsewhere which cool no problem.

Just for the craic on the system all his details were there but i had an option to change from male to female on the quote with everything else the exact same.

Low and behold it was about 400euro cheaper if he was a she. When i questioned my supervisor she insisted the circumstances were completely different bla bla bla.

I nearly put in a complaint about it but knew it wouldnt get anywhere.

So yes the law is there on gender equality but sure is there anyone even looking over it ?

I put in all the details of the 23 year old and changed it to male. Surprisingly, its the same price. So it is equal.

So what there saying is a 28 year old with full licence 7 years, is more of a risk than a 23 year old who only passed theyre test.. How ridiculous is that?

My brother has insurance with ' it's for women'

Most likely the reasoning behind it is that you had your driving lessons not too long ago whereas your partner had his a long time ago and it is assumed he did not drive (ever) in between, therefore would have 'lost' some reflexes...

It's not completly idiotic if you think about it.

If you swap sexes the quote for each is the same is it not? It's likely your occupation that's increasing the risk amount for you.

Haha, didn't know you could do that! Then again they would be breaking rules if they disallowed men.

It's a breach of the Equal Status Act to refuse goods or services to someone for gender.

It's a breach of Equal treatment legislation to vary an insurance premium based on gender. Men are fully entitled to insure with that company--in fact you can threaten to sue them in negotiation.

I've complained to the Advertising Standards authority about their ad campaign but got an insatisfactory response. Equality Authority is next. The fact that newspapers columnists aren't screaming blue murder just shows how onesided social justice activists really are

More generally the differing quotations show the need to shop around aggressively on insurance and, if neccessary, to change insurers annually. It's a bit of hassle but thing of it as earning a few hundred quid.

The cynic in me says those sites remember things like ip addresses, reg numbers, address, age, etc. I'd be inclined to do a quote for a woman then change it to a man, rather than the other way around.

Your on the money. Even my internal system did that withing the company.

Very interesting on the "Its for Women" example. Is it just the case then that they're relying on general ignorance out there toward the business that they're expecting to get majority women customers who are supposedly technically lower risk, to gain a general competitive edge? If that pays off for them, fair play is all I'd say
