I half heard the ad on the radio yesterday. Checked out the webpage and see that this is available for new Pay As You Go and Billpay Meteor customers.
    meteor.ie/roaming/#/europe_zone_1/france
Customer care have confirmed it for me, and you just have to top up in the last 90 days and it is applied automatically.

With the EU rules capping the price of EU roaming this year at a very low rate and abolishing it completely next year, I'd expect to see offers like this pop-up from all of the mobile companies.

This is only for new meteor customers so us current customers cant avail of it :-(

I live near the border and in NI constantly but cannot use data due to costs (Prepay)

Remember, ALL customers on ALL networks will be able to use their inclusive calls/texts/data when roaming in the EEA from May 1st.

Only proviso is that until 16th June 2017, the networks will be able to apply ex-VAT surcharges of up to 5c/min for outgoing calls, 1c/min for incoming calls, 2c per SMS and 5c/MB for data.

If you don't have remaining inclusive calls/texts/data, you will be charged the standard domestic rates applicable to your plan, plus any surcharge your network chooses to apply.

The website still offers extra charge options. Can anyone verify what OP is saying? If so syonara 3.

Hopefully it's true ... I checked that website too and it appears to be offering add ons and below that is this box which includes charges for making and receiving calls and texts, which doesn't imply free ....

5c/MB + VAT may seem cheap - but this still works out at more than €60 per GB - nothing like the €250 per GB that Three currently charge outside their own networks, but still fairly pricey.

The 1GB free data from Meteor & Eir is an excellent roaming offer by comparison.

Agreed. We won't really get the benefit of using our bundled data for EEA roaming until June 2017. The question really is whether you want free roaming now, at the price of switching to certain specific more-expensive new billpay plans. Or you can make do with your current setup for roaming until June of next year?

Maximum roaming rates will be below internal irish call and text rates changed my many of the providers... Who would have thunk it!

That may be true if you are going abroad for a week. If you are from Donegal and go to Derry once a week for a couple of hours shopping or to go to a show, the possibility of using a small bit of data without being gouged might be Godsend.

Nope, from May 1st it's changing to a surcharge system. The EEA roaming rate will be the relevant domestic rate plus the roaming surcharge.

So folk without bundled calls/texts/data may end up paying a lot more for EEA roaming from May 1st.

True, at least for the moment anyway. Of course, if the UK votes to leave the EU and the UK government also decides to leave the EEA, we'll be back to a free-for-all!

Thirty days on SIM-only but it doesn't appear to be available on the €15/month plan. Cheapest plan it's available on is €30/month.

I was about to ask customer service, but someone else bet me to it.
Here's meteor verifying it is for PAYG.
I think the PAYG offer is better than the 15e/month sim only plan, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm currently on sim only plan with meteor which is unlimited calls and texts and 5gb of 4G data for €24 a month, I'm now expected to pay €35 to get my "free 1GB of roaming data" and an extra 5gb of data.

I really hate when there is a great deal like this one and there comes someone to complain about. However I was roaming with old 15E per 1G plan from Meteor across few European countries. It really sucked, often I would lose network and my phone would spend a lot of battery power searching for networks, trying and failing to connect them. There are some decent, but not as good deals for data roaming on Lycamobile - where in fact data seems to work better in roaming than at home.

Surely that depends on the local network coverage of the country?? Not sticking up for meteor but I bought the 1gb add on last week for the UK and it was a lifesaver

Am I understanding this correctly? From May 1st, everyone on a bill pay plan (no matter who the provider) will get "roaming like home", in that if I have a bill pay plan that has:

Unltd calls to Ireland and UK
Unltd texts to Ireland and UK
    15gb data

(this IS my plan with a bit more on Eir business)

then, anywhere in EU, as long as I stay within my ultd call and text (easy) and my 15gb data (should be easy), my bill will be just as it would be had I stayed at home?

What about general IRE-EU calls and texts? I mean they are currently more expensive on my plan, are they introducing caps on what can be charged for these calls now?

Yes from June 2017 but from May 1st until then, there may (at your network's discretion) be additional surcharges.

    As I said:

Remember, ALL customers on ALL networks will be able to use their inclusive calls/texts/data when roaming in the EEA from May 1st.

Only proviso is that until 16th June 2017, the networks will be able to apply ex-VAT surcharges of up to 5c/min for outgoing calls, 1c/min for incoming calls, 2c per SMS and 5c/MB for data.

If you don't have remaining inclusive calls/texts/data, you will be charged the standard domestic rates applicable to your plan, plus any surcharge your network chooses to apply.

Basically, no more capping. From 1st May it's the price you pay at home plus an additional surcharge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Ah ok, so it won't be inclusive so to speak, it will be inclusive plus a possible charge on top as outlined above, depending on the network?

I'm pretty sure the data roaming charge for me in the EU is 20c p/mb, so even if it's 5c, it's still a good saving.

Yeah. Remember though that the 5c/MB for data is a surcharge so if you don't have an active data bundle whilst roaming, you'll also be paying the standard domestic out-of-bundle rate.

So for Meteor PAYG for instance, in the absence of an active data bundle, you'll pay €1.99 a day (up to 100MB) PLUS the possible (most likely inevitable) surcharge of up to 5c/MB ex-VAT.

Thanks for that, so as long as I still have some allowance left of my 15GB, which I should always, I shouldn't have to pay the out of bundle rates, or do you mean I need a roaming specific data add on? I get 250mb of roaming data a month on the plan I'm on right now, so would my allowance be whatever is left of my 15gb or whatever is left of my 250mb I wonder?

It doesnt look to be for PAYG...and €45 a month is the cheapest for this "free" add on.

I wouldnt call this a bargain.

I live in holland...you can buy a lyca sim with 1gb of data for €10.

Yeah, as long as you have some of that 15GB allowance left, that's what will be used, plus whatever surcharge of up to 5c/MB Meteor applies.

Not sure how roaming-specific add-ons will work from now on. I'd say though that folk might still be able to opt-out of default EEA roaming charges (as we can at the moment) and use things like Vodafone Red roaming instead.

Not strictly true about the ALL customers/ALL networks inclusive allowances bit.

Vodafone UK will let you use your allowances for 3 GBP per day (Eurotraveller from 30th April 2016). If you don't use the phone on a particular day then you don't get charged the 3 GBP.

If you don't opt in to Eurotravellers then they will just charge you the surcharge cost without it coming out of your allowances.

The regulated rates are the limit that can be charged and it's perfectly within each Network's right to offer rates that are better. So Vodafone UK has decided to charge the full allowable surcharges without the domestic-charge element but that's not going to continue when surcharges are abolished in June 2017.

I'd be very surprised (and very happy) if the Irish networks were to follow suit.

Be interesting to see what Vodafone UK do come June 2017. Guess the Eurotraveler option will disappear and just revert to allowance use.

I did ask Tesco mobile what their plans are for May 2016 and they indicated that they would charge at the standardised roaming rates. I would hope this means just at the surcharge price as per Vodafone UK.

Not true for Three. They are charging standard domestic rates when on a non three like home network in the eu from late April. Bundles/Allowances can't be used. That makes it 35c per min and €1.01 for data. The only thing that works out cheaper is €0.014 to receive a call. Confirmed by three for both Bill Pay and prepay

If visiting the UK from Ireland I use a Three Ireland PAYG SIM with €20 top up for all you can eat data , This allows you to use in the UK and the only limit is no 4G access in the UK , Done this several times and just this last weekend and put the SIM in wifes phone and setup hotspot and I connected to that and all good.

How? They're charging their domestic price for prepay. The orig screen shot doesn't mention bill pay - so perhaps you're referring to that?

The intention is to abolish EEA roaming completely so any usage when in another EEA country must cost no more than the same usage at home (subject to the surcharges that apply until June 2017).

So any usage that's free at home must also be free when roaming (plus the applicable surcharge).

Generally speaking, if you are visiting one country for 2 weeks or more, you would be best off getting a local pay as you go SIM. That normally gives you the best value for money.

See here for details of local SIMs available in Italy:
    http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Italy

Once the new rules hit in 2017, this will largely become unnecessary when travelling in the EU, but still true for other countries.

Which is exactly what I posted in this thread. I'm fully aware of the rates. However Three are charging domestic prices without the surcharge. You will pay the above costs, in my post, on Three IE PAYG in a non Feel at Home country.

You said it was illegal. It is not as they are simply charging the domestic price.

Wrong. They are not charging the appropriate domestic rates (zero) to those who have inclusive allowances.

If I have topped up my PAYG SIM by €20 and therefore have unlimited data for a month, then when roaming in the EEA during that month I should be charged no more than the applicable domestic rate (0c/MB) plus the applicable surcharge (5c/MB ex-VAT). Not 101c/MB.
