new Triban 500 vs second hand Carrera Zelos

Hi all,

I need your advice on what to choose between the two:

Triban 500 - € 385

Carerra Zelos 2014 (second hand)- about € 200

After two bad purchase decisions on bikes from adverts i'm just a bit skeptical of going for second hand bikes. They were not too expensive 60 and 90 and additional parts costs. One of them im using at the moment and the other is just useless. Not much can be done since the rear derailleur hanger is bent inwards.

I will be spending someone else's money for buying this and while they are fine with me getting a new bike I'm just not sure if i should spend 185 more for a new one. Another issue is that i may not be for long and may have to move somewhere else after college. I don't know. But i'd like to have a decent bike.

Most rear derailleur hangers can be replaced pretty cheaply, it is a common enough repair. Second hand is great if you enjoy mucking about with bikes and their parts, but can end up expensive. New has a guarantee and that lovely new bike feel.

I forgot to mention that was a road bike and an aluminium frame. The hanger seems to be part of the frame. I've attached a few pictures. I have tried to fix it a bit which is why it doesn't that bad. Do you think it can be replaced?

Don't think so. On most new bikes, that bit is a separate screw on part, as it commonly gets dinged. If it has been bent back and forward, I'm not sure a repair would be justified as the frame is probably compromised.
