Where to go from

I am a teacher with a first class bachelor of education and I recently graduated from a postgraduate h.dip in psychology with a first as well. I am trying to decide where to go next as I would really like to use my psychology degree and progress. I became very ill while doing my HDip and now only work part time as a teacher. I would love to do a masters of some sort that would allow me to set up my own private practice in the event that I ever become unable to teach at all. Ideally I'd love to work with children or families but recently I've also been interested in the therapy side of things which is more psychotherapy than psychology and I probably should have done a HDip in that field instead.

Originally my plan was to go straight onto becoming an educational psychologist however this has now become a 5 year part time PhD and costs a huge amount of money. I would need to give up teaching for 5 years to do it but even with these obstacles it is still appealing to me.

I started then to look into play therapy as I can see its benefits in children I have worked with. It is very hard to get sound information on this career path though as every course claims it is the only one accredited. I think the MA in play therapy in IT Cork seems to stand up and I would be able to do it part time over three years one day a week while still teaching. I'm based in Dublin though so if I was ill it could be a little difficult.

Has anyone any advice for someone like me interested in ultimately setting up a private practice?

    Thanks all
    Crunchie

Thanks Dar, when I contacted the IPTA which seems to be the Irish equivalent of the BPTA they warned me that which ever course I choose that it at least be accredited by a third level institution. The Children's therapy centre doesn't have this?

Crunchie - I have completed it with APAC or Play Therapy Ireland.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions

    It's accredited by HETAC

QQI took over from HETAC and FETAC, but questions remain to be asked about the whole accreditation process. It really doesn't seem to be very transparent.
