Can a normal kitchen sink plug be directly replaced with one of these things or does the whole caboodle need changing

Sick of buying plugs every coupla months

Usually you'd get that in two parts. The other half would replace your existing drain hole (for want of a better term)
    Something like this
    http://www.mcalpineplumbing.com/waste-outlet-fittings/sink/basket-strainer-wastes/1-189-basket-strainer-waste-stemball-plug.html?id=135&cat=135

Can you post a picture of what you have right now?

Just have a regular drain hole with the rubber plug like this

I guessed I would have to replace that whole drain part

Same thing happened to me. Old one broke and bought a new one from the same place I originally got the sink from. The new one broke very quickly too. Gave up.

Are you talking about what I'm thinking of using? Tad confused about your reply

Is there not a chain on your plug?
