Yet another reason to hate the Daily Mail

As if there wasnt enough already the Daily Fail tried to blackmail Lilly Wachowski into doing a story.
The Matrix film-maker, Lilly Wachowski, formerly known as Andy, has come out as a transgender woman in a candid statement titled “Sex change shocker – Wachowski brothers now sisters!!!”, four years after her sister and collaborator, Lana Wachowski, revealed she was a transgender woman.

Lilly Wachowski, 48, said in the statement to Chicago’s Windy City Times that she decided to make her gender reassignment public after a journalist from Britain’s Daily Mail attempted to coerce her to do an interview about her transition.
“I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly,” Wachowski wrote. “You know, when you’re living as an out transgender person it’s kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted – needed – some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable. But apparently I don’t get to decide this.”
In the statement she said that a Daily Mail journalist arrived at her door on Monday night, asking her to reveal her gender identity for the newspaper; she referred to the incident as a “threatened public outing against my will”, drawing comparisons to a similar incident involving the paper.
In 2013 a primary school teacher and transgender woman, Lucy Meadows, took her life after the Daily Mail published a column by Richard Littlejohn titled “He’s not only in the wrong body … he’s in the wrong job”. Michael Singleton, coroner for Blackburn, Hyndburn and Rossendale, criticised the “sensational and salacious” coverage which he blamed for her death.
In her statement Lilly Wachowski touched on the struggles faced by the transgender community, and said that although progress has been made: “We continue to be demonised and vilified in the media where attack ads portray us as potential predators to keep us from even using the goddamn bathroom.

“So yeah, I’m transgender. And yeah, I’ve transitioned,” she said, adding that she is out to her wife, family and friends.

Lana Wachowski, 50, formerly known as Larry, came out publicly as a transgender woman in 2012. The pair – who are notoriously private about their lives, and rarely give interviews – directed The Matrix and its two sequels, as well as Bound, Cloud Atlas, Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending and the TV series Sense8.
Lilly Wachowski’s transition comes amid a growing spotlight on transgender issues.

Last year the reality TV star and Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, became the most high-profile personality to come out as a transgender woman; she has been a vocal advocate for LGBT rights.
Amazon’s Golden Globe-winning series Transparent, which follows the gender transition of the head of a family, played by Jeffrey Tambor, has also helped shed light on the community. And last month Mya Taylor became the first transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit award for her role in the film Tangerine.

I suppose its no surprise they'd stoop this low but considering they've previously driven another transgender person to suicide its even lower. I dont get why this ****erag hasnt driven under yet.

The fact they've the cheek to sell their toilet paper substitute in Ireland after all the hate they directed towards us for years is something that still surprises me.Why the hell are people still buying their crap?

Disgusting behavior altogether. Nobody should have to disclose something like this until they're comfortable doing so and certainly not because some putrid, noxious little Englander rag is out for a cheap headline.

Ps the story is disgusting no argument on that.

Pathetic tactics on the part of the Daily Mail. I really don't see how knowing this is in the public interest. Let's hope right wins the day and the only reputation damaged is that of the paper. Hopefully readers(and the even larger number of monkey's bashing the keyboard who frequent their site) will someday start voting with their mouse and not wasting their lives on the click bait they churn out.

The Daily Mail are scum (amongst a world of media scum) and putting pressure on an innocent person is absolutely terrible and they really should be punished for doing **** like that.

However, the article does not say that the Daily Mail threatened to out her. It says "a Daily Mail journalist arrived at her door on Monday night, asking her to reveal her gender identity for the newspaper"

Zero evidence there of a "threatened public outing."

"She referred to the incident as a “threatened public outing against my will”" She may refer to it as that but based solely on the info in that article (is there more anywhere else?), that's not at all what it was.

Enough people buy it\read it for **** like this though, I'm sure. Why, I'll never quite know.

There's obviously an audience for it - not that that's an excuse; just a reason.

The amount of women I know who visit the Daily Mail Online Showbiz pages every day is kind of shocking and beyond depressing. They're keeping that cesspit in business.

Dunno why you quoted my post to ask that question. What you said has nothing to do with anything I said.

She has transitioned and is living as a woman. How would the daily mail be outing her when she already is "out".

Its disguised tabloid t&a via a "conservative" viewpoint, better writing (big words) cuddly animal stories and so on. Quite clever in the way its combined all its elements under the one tent. Fucking appalling shite in any other sense though - prudish flag waving xenophobic backward nonsense.

Well in fairness, if they showed up to her door asking about it then it really was only a matter of time before somebody like the DM were going to run a story. The Wachowski's are notoriously private people.

Her hand was forced, but at least this way she got to have some kind of control by releasing the news herself.

Have the likes of Jenner tabloidised (sensationalised) what is a personal hormonal/neurological issue into legitimate fodder for rags like the DM?

Your post stated a Daily Mail reporter arrived at her door. My reply was to that.

I don't get this I thought this was something that was public knowledge for ages  I am fairly certain I've even seen Links refer her and I would presume they ain't in the habit of maliciously "outing" people.

No, they were at it long ago. News of the world and the like used love anything like that - they're an odd lot that way, the Brits. You couldn't say they were a conservative society but at the same time the media and the like can be very prudish and sensationalist about matters sexual. Never understood it meself.

Her sister is also transgender and that was reported a few years ago so is probably the one you're thinking of.

Yes. Takes quite a bit of getting into, and I found some of the intertwining storylines dull and slow to find their footing, but once it gets into it, it's a really fantastic show. Hell, it's worth watching just for Jamie Clayton, her performance is amazing, and one scene in particular is seriously one of the most powerful moments I've seen on TV.

You're thinking of Lana, who was out for years, this is other Wachowski. So, as it turns out, both of them are trans.

Cheers, now I understand why its a ****ty thing to do. Its sort of ironic, I'm sure a hefty proportion of the DM's readership are utterly sick of Jenners self-publicism and think this stuff should be private and now they are pushing this as a public thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

    Everyone's sick of Jenner's ****.

Is that a thing? As in, if your sibling is trans are you more likely to be trans?

I know a good few Irish trans people. I'm not aware of any that have transferred siblings.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

The DM were going to run it as a story either way. However by getting an interview with her they would have framed the story as being her revealing it exclusively to the DM and giving an exclusive interview. Even taking as objective a view as possible, this is by far the most likely scenario. They wouldn't have approached her for an interview and then, after she refused, just not run the story anyway.

It's brilliant. After the dreadfully stupid Jupiter Ascending I'd written off the Wachowski's as one hit wonder has-been's, incapable of producing serious Sci-fi that was anything more then glossy, fetishistic and superficial. I was wrong.
Now the show is a very slow burn, designed for binge watching in chunks and probably not to everybody's taste, but I think it rewards the inital investment of time in it for fans of great sci-fi.

Personally I really wish the Wachowski's were more willing to be the spokespeople for transgender issues rather than that dreadful, self promoting idiot Kaitlyn Jenner, they are ten times as smart, eloquent and capable. Jenner and her whole clan are the worst aspect of celebrity culture and only serve as ambasadors for the lowest common denominator.
