Are you indecisive?

Well are you? I was in the position recently of having to decide between two jobs when a new job offer came in. Stay in my current position or leave. I could not, for the life of me, make up my mind. It dragged on for weeks. It came to a head the other day when I was forced to choose as the other company could not wait any longer and I still couldn't make up my mind.

It made me realise that I actually cannot make decisions to save my life. When I do, it takes FOREVER. It's actually a hindrance is daily life, and I only realise that now! Anyone similar?

All too often things are done for us. Parents decide what school we go to. Circumstances decide what subjects we do in school and often we drift along not knowing how we make decisions that affect our course in life.

The important thing is to write down all the pros and cons of each decision and brain storm them with as many sympathetic people as we can and only make the decisions that need making at any time. Do not be forced into speeding up a decision.

In fairness, this one affects your life in a significant way. I'd be worried if someone could make this sort of decision instantly.

In general, I think the problem today is the abundance of options. Take deciding what to watch on Netflix for example.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

When it comes to big things like buying a house, car etc, then I'm usually certain and clear in my decisions.

I think most people when given the opportunity of a new job, tend to go back and forth with their decision because they know they are taking a risk and will more than likely not be able to return to the old job if things don't work out.

I am bad at making decisions when it comes to other people though. I hate if someone asks me to choose a pub or restaurant because I worry that they won't like it. I'm fairly laid back and not too fussy about specific places myself. I prefer to just go with the flow so I am happy for someone else to pick.

My bro told me about a phrase "analysis to paralysis".. and it makes sense.

Think about things for too long and nothing gets done.

In this scenario, I would take out a sheet of paper, put a big line down the centre and list the pro's and con's. Give it 24 hrs, or 48 hrs and keep going back to the list until you've set out pretty much all you can on the topic. Then make your decision.

    It works for me anyway...

I'll think things over for an extended period, but yeah, I'm pretty decisive when it comes to big issues such as jobs, relationships, etc.

I made a huge decision recently, had been thinking about it for months and then just made the decision when I wasn't expecting to.
The day before I made the decision I had no intention of deciding (change of career and a new direction in life) but then just made the decision, and within 24 hours there was no turning back.

I can be indecisive, but I like to give a lot of thought to big decisions and not rush in, then when I come to a conclusion that I am happy with. I can be very decisive. I surprised myself by how fast things moved when I did decide.
But there is no point doing something in haste and repenting at leisure.

This is ridiculous. For the record im pretty decisive, except when looking at chipper menus.

Sounds like my OH. Sitting there starving and waiting to order something and he's there reading the menu for about an hour which he must know off by heart by now and then decides to get the same thing he always gets :)

Yup I am. Nice quote from Freud on just having to go with your gut on the big decisions:

"When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. In vital matters, however, such as the choice of a mate or a profession, the decision should come from the unconscious, from somewhere within ourselves. In the important decisions of personal life, we should be governed, I think, by the deep inner needs of our nature"
