I stayed in Park Central Hotel - it was a number of years ago but was very central and not overly expensive

I stayed in the New Yorker a good few years ago. It's beside Madison Square Gardens and a few blocks from the Empire State. It was pretty good value at the time, but it was a while ago...

Use Priceline mystery hotel aka express deals the week of the visit. Every night Hotels have tons of empty rooms but they don't want to be seem as lowering their standard aka prices so they put their excess rooms up secretly on these last minute deal websites. Its Win Win for them, they sell some the excess rooms and they don't have to lower their advertised prices.

You don't know the hotel you are booking till after you pay, but you know the location and star rating of the hotel. So you usually get a hotel for up to half the price.

New York isn't short of hotels and they are all mostly the same within their star rating so it always works out.

I use it every time i go to NYC.

Got a good price on this place a couple of years ago, it's a really nice spot, a 5 minute walk from Penn station.

sryanbruen if you could give us a budget and when you are going over it would be helpful.

I've been over 3 times in the last 3 years each time staying in 4 star hotels, each time getting a better price than the last.

I got this hotel with 2 double beds, family room between 3 of us for €1150 for 6 nights, great location, over St Patrick's parade a fortnight ago.

We stayed in the Hotel Mela on West 44th.
Right beside times square, has a nice bar with reasonable priced food beside it (the Long Room), great deli for breakfast around the corner (Cranberry Deli) and another great bar (Heartland Brewery) very close.

    Hotel was excellent value.

We booked with travel republic and got a price that included city tax so it was one less thing to worry about
