As exciting as the news is, my first thought was actually 'hope that doesn't impact Arrow and Eureka much'. Those two companies have done an incredible job in the last few years in ensuring the lack of Criterion is a much easier pill to swallow, and it would be a shame if Criterion and its extra resources denied the smaller companies of the bigger hitters that help support their more niche releases.

That said, on the other hand more competition can also be a very welcome thing, and the sheer range and variety of Criterion's catalogue is something we could definitely benefit from. And it would be cool to have lavish releases of some of the iconic films Arrow/MoC can't afford. The first five films being released don't quite set the heart racing the way recent Arrow announcements have (Human Condition boxset!!!), but will be eager to see how this plays out :)

They could just make their releases region free like practically every other blue Ray on the market :p

Well I assume the purpose of acquiring the UK rights is so they can make some of their releases region-free, or region A+B anyway.

If the market for Criterions in the UK grows, we may see UK exclusive titles, but in the meantime I don't think Eureka have that much to worry about. They can't afford most big titles as it is.

Great news, hopefully I can pick up Shoah for a decent price now.

Eureka currently have the UK/Ireland rights to Shoah and released the Blu-Ray (with several other Lanzmann films included) only a year or so ago. So it's very unlikely Criterion will be releasing a version any time soon beyond their US one.

There's some discussion on Bluray.com regarding what rights Criterion will be exercising in the UK market. It's fantastic news but there's no indication that that this is a full-on push into a new market. For example I don't think people should hold their breath waiting for re-releases of their most celebrated releases.

I'm curious about their pricing. In the US are Criterion much more expensive than a regular Bluray. £12.99-£14.99 is average for a Eureka/Arrow release. I'm hoping Criterion come in at around that price.

Zavvi have them provisionally priced at €37.99. They can fcuk back to America if that's the case.

That's pretty much standard for criterion, I've only ever bought them when Barnes & Noble had them at half price.

They'll be about the same as their US prices, probably more because of the BBFC fees. But there will be sales, which is when most Criterion collectors tend to purchase as Mickeroo said.

The cost and what films will they be releasing are the big questions and I guess will there be a new numbering system for the UK

That's me out then. There's no way I'd pay that for a Bluray.

Not for a single disc job but for something special.

I paid around that when they re-released Salo in the gorgeous 2 disc DVD set 7 or 8 years ago.

Definitely. If I feel like it's worth it I'd pay stupid amounts of money, and have done in the past for films. But a single disc release is not worth the best part of €40. It's just too much.

I'm delighted to see that Criterion are releasing some of their new releases as well, and not just older titles. 'Dr Stangelove', 'Easy Rider' and 'In a Lonely Place' are all upcoming titles that are being released on either side of the pond.

I have to say I'm ridiculously excited about Criterion's entry into the market, but Arrow Academy will continue to get most of my money based on their upcoming releases. I picked up the Fassbinder box set last month and it's of exceptional quality, and I expect they'll do the same with Kobayashi's 'The Human Condition', along with English-language classics like 'The Ox-Box Incident'.

All in all it's a great time to be a home-movie cinephile in this part of the world. I'd say Arrow and Criterion are about even in terms of production quality at the moment, with Arrow growing stronger and stronger in terms of catalogue. However Criterion's artwork is irresistible so I'm deeply concerned about how much money I'm gonna be spending over the next few years.

Has anyone picked up one of the UK Criterion's yet?
