    Hi

Just wondering what is a good moisture content for kindling? Got offered a load of timber at 20% MC, not sure how good that is (don't usually measure MC, just go by feel!) Thanks.

Bit high for kindling, but wouldn't take much to dry out. My stoves burn wood at 18% -20% although there are one or two on the forum who burn at a higher MC. I always have a small pile of fresh kindling alongside the stove ready... dry as a bone when it is used.

Kindling should be more like 12 or 14% M.C. Getting your stove up to a hot operating temperature quickly means less smoke and chimney deposits. I like using a lot of kindling on top of a mountain of scrunched-up newspaper balls -an instant roaring inferno in about 20 seconds-quicker than firelighters and cheaper too.
