I currently have a 1.4 Petrol Astra but it's now 11 years old. I'm toying with the idea of getting a new (not 'new') car. What would ye recommend?

I don't want anything too big, as it's just me.
I drive 2000+km per month and need something reliable.
    I don't want a Yaris!
Budget is anything up to about €14,000
Diesel is a must I think

You might be able to afford a new car if you got one on PCP. No harm in looking into it and you might be able to avail of the scrappage schemes been done by some of them. Hyundai and Nissan are both offering scrappage schemes at the moment.
You could also look at getting a Dacia Sandero with the 1.5 diesel engine. Its reliable and proven technology. They are very reasonably priced too.
If you decide to buy second hand a Renault Megane 1.5dci is worth a look. Renault make good diesel engines.

    Peace and long life.

Buying a new car hadn't crossed my mind as I understand there's a fair bit of depreciation on them. I do quite like the look of the meganes, thanks.

14k gets you a myriad of options.
What cars in that segment do you like the look of? Do you need back doors? Do you want something a bit special or just a car that's newish?

14k would be the tops I'd pay as that's what I paid for my current Astra all those years ago! I like back doors. I was thinking of a Golf as I know VW have a good resale value and are generally reliable but they are more expensive. I am not keen on an Astra again as a friend has one and has had some bother with it. I'm looking to upgrade to at least a 10/11 as I have a 05 at present.
