I really like it when a newspaper column tells me what emotions to feel and what exactly I should be disgusted by. Takes all the hard work out of forming my own opinion.

She tried to feed chicken bones to a Polar Bear. A polar BEAR. I'm sure she thought that would end well.

She was feeding the bear ffs, that's natural selection right there.
    Poor dog.

Would I throw my dog? No.

Would I throw your dog? Yes.

    (I don't have a dog.)

I have two dogs, and those two dogs would come before a human that I don't love as much as them.

Philosophically, it's know as the trolley problem. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem) Do you kill one to save many? In this case, do you sacrifice the dog to save the woman? As much as I love dogs and my own dog, it would be a difficult decision, but yes, I would save the person. The problem becomes easier to make a decision on, when far more People are involved, but it still doesn't make any decision regarding life of one over another any easier.

Edit: Having read the article and as cruel as it was, he made the right decision in the very short time he had to make a decision. She shouldn't have been so stupid as to feed a beer in the first place, but both her and the dog survived either way, which is a win for all I suppose. Here's to hoping it will be a life lesson to all, Don't feed beers and if you find yourself staring one down, find a safe as possible method of escape that creates as little harm as possible.

So if the highly unlikely situation arose where a Bad Guy for some nefarious reason made you choose between one of your dogs being shot and a lovely little old lady being shot what you're saying is that you'd let the lovely little old lady who gives to charity and helps the poor and has lots of grandchildren and is lovely and little and old.... you'd let her be shot???????

    You. Monster.

My dogs were there for me, and kept me company and made me happy when nobody else gave a ****.
My dogs are happy to see me every single day even when I'm grumpy and in a bad mood.
My dogs will still snuggle me if I've no makeup on, if I'm not showered, if I look like ****.

My loyalty lies there, not with some old woman who gives to charity.

I love dogs, absolutely love them. I love my dog, more than I love most people.

I think the morally correct thing to do is to put human life first.

If someone broke into your house, and had a gun.
Do you think another person would save you or themselves first?
Do you think a dog would protect you or themselves first?

For me, that would genuinely depend on the human.

But then for me humans are just animals with voices and really crap attitudes towards other animals.

Depends on the person. My mother would take a bullet for me, my dad would too, my best friend would and I'd take a bullet for all of them in kind.

It also depends on the dog to be fair, they're not all brave heroic souls.

I can see where you're coming from but I think someone's dad, mother, brother, sister comes before someone's dog.

I've lost pets and I've lost a sister. I know which one is worse for me.

I'm sorry, I know that's crap, I've lost both my parents and I would have chosen them too. I meant in the op situation where it's a stranger. Do you just choose a stranger over animals you love just because they're human or your dog who's loyal as hell.

A human everyday of the week. Don't care which animal it is, nor if endangered or whatever, human life is more valuable.

Of course such direct scenarios are exceedingly rare. I don't imagine it's something most of us will ever face!

The video show's F all to be honest. Where is the woman at the time the guy throws the dog in? Why are they laughing? Is it a nervous reaction or do they think this was fun?

WTF is the polar bear doing there in the first place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,731 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Do you just choose a stranger over animals you love just because they're human or your dog who's loyal as hell.
We can only speculate on this unlikely scenario, but my guess is that I would put my dog, your dog, any dog, in harm's way to save a stranger.

If it became apparent that it was the only way to save them, I'd say I would do it without hesitation.

It's not because they're human, it's because they're someone's son or daughter, someone's brother or sister, someone's dad or mam, someone's husband or wife, someone's best friend.

Honestly in the direct scenario above I'd be unlikely to even think of throwing a dog at the bear to protect someone, it just wouldn't occur to me so I'd likely wind up doing something stupid like trying to distract the bear with ... me.

There must be some sort of sociopathy at play with someone who would put a dog's life above a human's.

Yeah but look at the next heart warming story down in the metro where a couple stomped their baby to death.

Who would sacrifice even a cockroach to save them?

I bet the next time Leonardo DiCaprio goes for a jaunt in the wilderness he's going to bring a dog frisbee.

I can't say it's something I would have thought of or that I'm happy he did it, though it's not a dissatisfactory outcome overall seeing as neither dog or woman appear to have been injured.

The whole "would you" is a bit of a philosophical question. If it were me and my dog, would I throw my dog to save her? No. Neither me nor my dog made the stupid decision to hand feed a polar bear so we shouldn't have to suffer the consequences of her stupidity. I would otherwise try to help though.

Everything dies. The question is not about death but about grief. Makes no odds to the dead person/animal. The question is whether you would allow one person to suffer grief now in return for delaying your own grief. Or take the grief yourself to save someone else's.

Depends entirely on the human involved.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Before you know it they'll be over here on the dole whilst taking our jobs.

I went on holiday for two weeks and the mil was minding the dogs, and the smallest one wouldn't eat while I was gone. So no, I don't think it's because they're just being fed

I think the real question is why the fúck did someone have a polar bear in what appears to be their back garden?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭The Backwards Man

So the town with the biggest arctic military base in the Russian Far East and nobody has a gun? Looks to me like they threw the dog at the bear for the lolz after the woman had escaped.

Could be years old too, didn't happen today or yesterday anyway, spend much time wandering about there this time of year in your ordinary clothes at this time of year and a polar bear would be the least of your worries.

i'd have thrown dog after dog into the pit to save a person even if that person was hitler. Human life is more valuable than a dogs life.

Although hitler would probably admonish me as i heard he was kind to dogs.

which is interesting...in the sense that it shows posters like LexieOnRale have hitler-esque qualities.

So you wouldn't sacrifice your dog to save a human life, but you will leave him to starve for 2 weeks while you go on holiday?

This is surreal. You can't actually be serious.

So when, God forbid, you are driving down your road and through some unfortunate sequence of events you end up having to chose whether to hit one of your dogs or a child on the way to schools.... you scream 'luv ya Puppers' and plow into the child?

    Foul.

A stranger is someone else's parent, sibling friend too though.
