Live under the ground or the sea?

Ok so we all know that we're in for a rough century climate wise. Increasing storms, rapidly changing weather and rising oceans. I think a fair chunk of us will find ourselves either living underground or under the sea before retirement.

So the question I have for you is which would you choose to live in? All other things being equal e.g. the habitats will be much the same size with much the same facilities. You won't have loads of views in the underwater environment though. You're down deep and the pressures are immense so they keep windows and the likes to a minimum.

I reckon I'd go for underwater life. There's something very primordial about the thought of us returning to the sea*.

*note: we will have both types of colonies. Also the rich will escape to a very comfortable existence in a luxurious enclave in Antarctica. Your children will dream of being chosen to work there on the few menial tasks for which they still need plebs.

Where would you prefer to live? 15 votes

You allude to an interesting point, food. I'm not big on seafood tbh, would prefer the offerings of the underground lads I reckon.

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade

I'd ask my friends to come and see
    An octopus's garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus's garden near a cave

We would sing and dance around
Because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
    (Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
    (Happy and they're safe)

We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you

This is an interesting question. I can see why both options would have benefits but I think it would be harder to liver under ground just because there is no source of vitamin D3 from the sunlight to grow plants.

Whereas under the ocean where "You're down deep and the pressures are immense so they keep windows and the likes to a minimum" there'll be an abundance of sunlight.

Both will make extensive use of nuclear power to, well, power things. Over time I imagine the Fish-heads (as they'll be called) will start to harvest some kind of sea farmed, genetically engineered algae and plankton. The Mole-people will pride themselves on their protein rich, worm farms.
