Hi guys, I've a fireplace in the house that's never had a fire in it.

Chimely is fine, I've had a gas pipe removed and checked so it's safe.

Just as I thought I would light a fire I noticed the grate that came with the fireplace sits over the black part of the fireplace

Is this ok? Or should I get a grate that is smaller and fits in better?

Is the marble surround cut? I see the hearth is which is a good sign. If it's not cut, it could break with the heat of a real fire.

I think this is what you're referring to?

That grate looks big to me, it should not be out beyond the surround at the top. I suggest it needs a smaller grate and two of those cheek pieces (don't know what they are called) on the sides.

Yup, that looks ok. Grate is way too big though, it's outside the firebox

Yeah I can see this causing some issues. Fire can easily "out-pour" so to speak and can lead to accidental fire damages. The fireplace I use is bigger than this but the grate doesn't come out at all like this.
