7 seater for 8k? Best options

So I am looking to buy new car, due to changes in circumstances my budget of circa 20k has been quickly reduced. So I am trying to get if I can get away with 8k.

I am looking for 7 seater. Now I don't mind if back 2 seats are just for kids but just need 7 seater for space etc

Badge/name is not a huge consideration but I don't want something that looks like a lego block. Would like some comforts like cruise controls, & parking sensors

I don't mind if petrol or diesel as we have a diesel car already so will use petrol for run around town. If possible auto but if deal with manual then open

I have been looking around and no idea where to start in this budget. I want to try and get something that will be reliable. Will probably keep for a few years till I get my budget back up:P

id normally say corolla verso but the auto on them is dreadful and it's hard to get one with cruise.

Honda Frv 6 seats should be considered too.

if you want 7 seater style car with 5 seats and a huge boot then the seat altea xl would be a shrewd move. they're usually cheap because they're a niche model.

The options above are only guidelines. Would consider dropping for something good value

Sorry just read correctly. I do want the options for the 7 seats as they will be required some of the time. I do not mind if the 2 seats at back are just for small kids.....

yes, it's a 5 seat mpv with the high seating position and cabin size you'd get in the likes of a touran but instead of 2 extra seats you get an enormous boot. they're cheap because they're neither one thing nor the other.
from your op I got the impression you weren't gonna use the rearmost seats?

One to keep an eye out for would be a 1.6 petrol Peugeot 308sw with the optional 2 extra seats, they're very rare in petrol. There's only 3 petrols for sale on done deal and none are 7 seat. They are usually cheap. They're not nearly as flakey as the 307 it replaced.

Do you know if the 1.4 engine would struggle a bit on power?

It's turbocharged usually, so minimum 122bhp, which is plenty for it. I can't see from the pics, but it looks like a TSI badge on the boot. Not sure if they actually did an FSI engine on those, if it is one, it'd be 100bhp, which isn't great for the size of it.
It would be better than any 1.6 mpv it'd be up against.

Mazda 5 in petrol form going cheap enough these days. Honda Stream is another one to look at but they are mostly Japanese imports so can be more expensive to insure.

They are a beast of a car. Very reliable, but make sure it has FSH. Thos 1.9ltr engines have a very good reputation. A family member bought an 07 car last year and it has taken everything thats been thrown at it, so to speak.

i would be a little careful with 1.9s of that era. some like the BXE code have their share of failures

Except for the tax (€1200/yr) that will eat the purchase savings alive. Currently it is exempt - so nobody really cared... But a nice finding!

To give you an idea. In 2009 there were 15 captivas regged. All in January and all in Dublin. All were band F tax.

I wouldnt touch that with a 10ft pole unless it was to export it.

VRT refund would be €3373, but I doubt VRT was paid day 1 as it seems to be a disabled driver/passenger car.

Maybe commercial it, 2 seater, but otherwise you'd want to be mad.

Took a test drive in SMAX, Verso and Carens the other day. Really liked the SMAX, there is a couple out there with low mileage but is there any real way to confirm the mileage is correct?

Motorcheck and all them dont seem to be great

It's not really that bad. Assume the worse case scenario: 225g/km. This equals to ~8.5l/100km. In real life more like 10l - but this is far from horrible.

I would be in an e class all day long in that budget. Volvo is very cheap and will do a great job for you but I can't get over the looks it looks very stretched and out of proportion

I'm a really struggling to get what I want so was thinking today I might stretch the budget. Use the 8k as deposit and then take out loan so I am looking at 16-18k range.

My original plan was buy something for 8k, save for a year or so and then swap it for newer model. For 8k there is not much out there so think I will be better just to spend the extra now and get something decent for a few years.

Or am I mad?
