I'm 22 years old and during a visit to the doctor for the flu, he referred me to breastcheck, because he found a lump and family history. ..the problem is my mum just cancelled my health insurance so does anyone know do I need health insurance or will it be free since I was referred? Sorry for sounding so clueless but I've never had to use insurance before so I've no idea and can't find an answer anywhere

Breastcheck is free to all patients.

Private health insurance will just speed things up.

www.breastcheck.ie. Note that it is mainly aimed at older women, more your mum's age than your age. But if you don't ask you won't get. On secont thoughts that GP should have referred you straight to hospital for an urgent x-ray. Whatever you do, get it checked out thoroughly as a matter of urgency.

I had suspicious breast lumps a few years ago. My GP referred me privately to a surgeon and I was then given an ultrasound in James Private a week later.

On the public system it will take longer, but the same procedure applies.

The OP does not qualify for Breastcheck. Its for over-50s. She should go back to her GP and ask him/her to arrange a urgent x-ray at her nearest general hospital. If my daughter came home with the OP's story, I'd be kicking the GP's door down to get her referred as an urgent case. As you know better than I, lumps should be ignored.

Sorry I meant that the procedure I followed either private or public is the norm.

I was wondering the same, did the GP say that the Op is being referred for an ultrasound outside of breastcheck

He said he was referring me to get it checked, in Waterford, I just presumed it was breast check because when he was filling out the referral form the logo was on the top corner, I didn't ask him much questions because I got a bit of a fright to be honest, but I'll suppose know more when I get the appointment in the post
