My Samsung LCD has a line through the middle of the screen. It is just 12 mths old so I am not impressed. I goggled & it seems this is a common issue. Have I any comeback with Samsung?

Absolutely - although you could try the retailer first.

EU rules which protect consumers when buying goods and services are valid no matter where in the EU the goods are purchased and are enforceable for at least 2 years from delivery of the goods. In Ireland, there is limitation period of 6 years within which a consumer can bring an action against a trader for ‘the lack of conformity’. For example, if you order a laptop which turns out to have less memory than it is supposed to have, the problem may not be obvious to you immediately, but it is still an inherent fault in the product which the trader must remedy if you discover it within the limitation period.

Under the Sale of Goods and Associated Guarantees Directive 99/44/EC if the goods become faulty or do not conform to the contract consumers can request a repair or replacement, which should be provided free of charge, within a reasonable time and without any significant inconvenience

A guarantee/warranty gives you additional protection to consumer rights as outlined above. It is not instead of them.

This only means that the consumer doesn't have this additional level of protection; they still have their legal rights, and can still seek redress.

For example, a seller might offer a '6 month warranty' with a car, or a computer, but this '6 month' warranty will be in addition to, not instead of, your legal rights.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I have been in touch with Samsung who at first kept saying it was out of warranty. Eventually they opened a repair case so I have to await their call. I did not speak to the Retailer yet.

Stick to your guns with Samsung, too. "Warranty" is over and above your statutory rights, it does not replace them.

So you're still covered for at least two years if you bought the TV anywhere in Europe (e.g. Amazon.co.uk, etc.) or up to six years if you bought it in Ireland as to the TV being fit for purpose.

Thank you. I got a phone call today & they said it was out of warranty. I pointed out my rights & now someone is coming out to fix it FOC on Wednesday. Fingers crossed it does the job. Thanks for your help.

Same issue here, except 1 line near the RHS has now morphed into 5 or 6, pretty annoying to say the least!

Happy to help, glad that they're able to see sense and come out to take a look. Hopefully it should be fixed (or replaced!) with minimal fuss from here on.
