Any experience of using the app SKIPROAMING while travelling abroad. or is their claim that you can save up to 99% on roaming & International calls a scam ?

save 99% compared to what, and where are you going anyhow ?

in the EU your mobile company is bound to certain limits of charges which are a fraction of what they used to charge, so to save 99% on those would be some feat

Nowadays I dont bother with changing sim card or other tricks when just in the EU. Its actually cheaper for me to text when abroad than on my home network and the odd 20second call to see where the wife is doesnt come to much.

Data can be a problem, but with free wifi, and maps which download to your phone rather than needing a connection, its more of a luxory than necessity

If you want to pickup e-mails and the like when in Spain, either switch off mobile data before you go and use free wi-fi in pubs and cafes or see what roaming data packages your network has to offer. The worst thing you can do is to simply go to another country and allow your phone to go looking for data when roaming without organising some kind of roaming data package. Call and SMS rates are pretty ok because of the EU rules that came in a few years ago but basic roaming data rates are pretty expensive.

I have an 'EU Pass' setting on my 3 (formerly O2) account so for €2.50 each day I'm roaming in the EU, I get 50MB which allows me to do basic e-mail and lookup news and sports results from home. The current data roaming EU rate on the 3 network is 24.6c per MB i.e. 10 times more expensive.
