Virign Media Out, Eir In?

Virgin Media's internet is appauling at this stage. They in a sense killed "UPC". We had no problems with them just the new "Virgin Media".

I have been in contact with the new "Eir". Their new services seem amazing. I live in one of their "compatable areas". I wanted to know if anyone uses the new Eir and if they like it or not. Like it meaning that it works without dropping connections.

I was speaking to a representative and they told be with their new "Eir Fibre" that we would be connected directly to their network, instead of sharing with 20 other homes. I think this sounds credible enough for me.

What are your opinions on them? I would love to know

Its totally dependent on proximity to a cab, its great if you live within about 800m of one.

I would but in my case I went Vodafone as it was cheaper for their VDSL service, after all it's the same network. I live a few hundred meters from a cab and get a solid 100mb for €38 per month, before I had 240MB UPC that would drop the work VPN connection upto 20 times in a eight hour day, no support or solution from UPC, since moving the overall consistency of the network connection has been 100% and I can now actually work from home.

That is great news. At least I am not the only one finding the new UPC's internet dreadful. I think Eir's customer service is better though. Vodafone's representative's are quite awful in my opinion.

Ill consider the two networks for sure

    Thanks

My workplace got in Eir Fibre last July, which is exchange based on a 30Mbps down / 8Mbps up profile. I cannot recall a single day where the Internet gave any issue. Although 30Mbps sounds puny in comparison to 360Mbps, it's plenty quick for our needs. Actual throughput is a consistent 28Mbps down and 7.3Mbps up test after test when no one else in the building is online.

While at a Bowling Alley a week ago, I did a speed test on my phone connected to their free Wi-Fi. Based on the following result, it looks like they were on a cabinet connected Eir Fibre connection and this gives an idea of the throughput you could get if you're close to the cabinet, noting that this test was over Wi-Fi.

I'm in the process of moving from Virgin Media to Eir. My install is booked for this coming Tuesday. I'm 120 metres from a cab so I'm hopeful that it'll work fine and the line checkers all report 100 meg for neighbouring addresses.

While I'm taking a significant downgrade in raw speed (360 to 100). I think that Eir's better peering might make up for that. It's rare that I've reached the full 360Mb anyway.
