Buses would be crazy - it's a right hoof even by train.

Flying is not that expensive when you factor in the comfort factor.

It is rather a long way, near enough 2400km, did the 3 hour flight time not make that apparent?

By high speed train it would be around 15 hours with connections, indirect via Shenzen or 24 hours by sleeper train direct HK-Beijing.

By bus you'd be looking at well over a day travelling time, I doubt any direct ones operate so you'd be needing several long distance coaches, I doubt you'd do it in much less than 2 days overall.

As long as your homeward flight is not via Hong Kong. You can't depart to same country you arrived from.

I think the fastest way by land would be train to Guangzhou (about 4 hours) and then the high speed train to Beijing (8 hours). I've done Beijing-Guangzhou on the high speed train and it's a nice journey.

But, the total cost including a visa would be close to €200 anyway apart from the hassle of getting a Chinese visa.

Chinese long range buses are comfortable but the times given for journeys are total fiction.

I think you've already figured it out but flying is the easy option.

Don't even consider the bus. It would probably be 45 hours. The longest bus I was on in China was 18 hours and it was horrific. You could cross the border to Shenzhen and then fly to Beijing, would be cheaper
