Saorsat and Freeview on a Sky satellite dish?

    Hey guys,

I think the answer is no, but the more I research the more confused I get!

I've seen this linked in this forum before...
    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-24-WP95SAT

It's a Freesat and Saorsat 2 in 1 box. Does anyone know, can I just plug in a cable from a Sky dish on the roof and use both systems.

I think only Freesat will work with that set up?

I do have Saorview built into my TV, but even with huge "rabbit ears" arial I can barely get a signal and it's not watchable.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Thanks,
    BigAl.

When you say "rabbit ears" are you referring to an indoor aerial?

I'm sitting on his TV and blocking the view. It's not really working for either of us.

You are correct. If you plug in a cable from your existing sky disk you will only get the UK free to air channels. To pick up SaorSat you will need a second dish pointing at 9 degrees East with a KA LNB.

It would be worth checking if a proper ariel (either in the attic or mounted externally) would get the SaorView signal at an acceptable level.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Guess I can hook the laptop up to the TV and use the RTE player or something like that for those channels, and rock out the Freesat using the Sky dish for the rest.

Yeah, I meant an 'indoor aerial'. I used it in Rathmines no problem, but no such look in the new abode in Castleknock unfortunately.

    Thanks again!

Kippure transmitter is the likely transmitter for Castleknock area. Indoor aerial isn't good enough.

One of these aerials fitted in the attic might pull in enough signal there, outdoor aerial would be recommended. The aerial feed can be carried on the same cable as the satellite signal if required and split at the TV point.

Saorsat is a different satellite and different LNB, and a proper Saorview installation would be cheaper and better.

If you can get Saorview, do it properly with a decent external aerial at roof height. Check out saorview.ie to get the details of aerial group, transmitter direction and polarisation.

The Sky dish will work for Freesat.

Just to add, saorsat doesn't carry tv3, 3e or utv ireland either.
I'd rule out the possibility of saorview reception before considering saorsat

Thanks for all the helpful answers!

I went into PowerShiity to pick up a freesat box last night. On their website, they offer 2 weeks refund for any reason (it's an EU thing they have to do for "distance selling"). I mentioned this to the guy in store (older guy, looked like the manager) and he said no way would there be a refund.

I had asked just in case no signal was picked up or whatever. I had the website open on the phone and he got very annoyed and basically told me to feck off and if I bring it back for a refund he make sure not to do it!!

So much for supporting local bricks and mortar ;o(

Still managing to buy Irish tho so gonna give this a go...

I'll report back when it's all set up.

    Thanks again,
    Al.

My old sky dish can pick up Saorview channels AND Free to air channels - BBC,ITV,E4 etc. Is this normal?

I use a little UPC adapter and some old UPC cables to hook it to into back of tv and it gets all of the Saorview channels. When I split the cable between the Saorview setup and Satellite simultaneously the satellite signal is not strong enough to give signal for FTA channels. Is there any way to boost this signal so I can use both side by side(not to watch at same time, but to be able to switch between the two without messing with cables etc?)

Yes, use a dedicated Saorview aerial: the Saorview signal isn't coming from the dish, it's just being picked up on the cable.

Don't interconnect the satellite & terrestrial tuners with a simple split, although the 2 signals can share a cable (say if you install an aerial outside), given the right kind of combiner/splitters.

He is quite right. He does not have to offer a refund unless it is faulty, not as described etc.
The distance selling regulations only apply to "distance selling" such as online mail order.

    From Power****tys own website...

"when you purchase online or by phone you have the right to cancel your order and return the goods, anytime before and up to fourteen (14) business days starting from the day after the goods are received by you"

They were talking about distance selling on Newstalk and an "expert" said buy Xmas gifts from Irish stores online as you have extra rights compared to in store purchases and can then return unwanted items!

Edit: Just to add, I was talking about an online purchase after the guy said no in store refunds. Anyway, onwards and upwards. Freesat box ordered, watching the postbox now!

Just mirroring the attitude I got in the store.

I went out of my way to go there to support a local Irish business rather than Amazon.

The guy had no idea about his companies own policy. When I said I'd buy on power city online rather than in store he said don't, he didn't care, he wouldn't refund me anyway!

Can only report back what I encounter.

    In more constructive news...

The Edision Box arrived and is set up and working less than 24 hours after ordering it! Plugged in the cable from the Sky dish, turned it on, and voila, about 80 channels were there!

I reprogrammed it and got 390 channels now, there's a good few HD and more than enough there to justify moving away from subscriptions to Virgin / Sky etc.

Very happy with the new setup, thanks again for the tips on here guys!

    BigAl.
