Trial Shifts...Am I Just Being Taken Advantage Of?

    Hi guys! Thanks for looking.

I've been back in Dublin a couple of months and have been having a crap time, sadly. This time it's not the rental market (I'm not even on to that part yet) but my having to work for free so much and not getting a job. I'm getting sick of it and am afraid that I'm just being taken advantage of.

I'm a 3rd year apprentice hairdresser, so it does make sense that the salon owners would want to see me work and assess my skills. The trouble is, they always say that they want to see me work on clients but have me doing assistant/cleaning work all day. I've worked at 4 different places since January, probably a total of two and a half weeks of unpaid work. They always thank me, tell me what a great job I've done, and I *know* I've been doing a great job since I come back from a 15 min break and it takes me most of an hour to get back on top of things. They will always "ring me tomorrow" or something like that. The last place especially sounded like she was hiring me and was putting me on the next weeks rota.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I *know* it's not because I'm incompetent, inefficient, rude or poorly dressed. Hair is the one thing I love and am good at, and it really is starting to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. Do these people have any intention of hiring anyone? Two of the places still have the same job posts up, bumped up every couple weeks. Are they just taking advantage of free labour?

My most important question, should I not do any more trial Shifts? I'm a bit afraid that I'll never get work if I don't, but I'm so sick of working hard for nothing. It just isn't fair. I was thinking of asking to be paid for a trial, though I'm sure that would ruin my chances as well.

Does anyone have experience with this? I don't know what to do. I really want to get into a salon but I can't afford a finishing course to ger my qualification, nobody will hire me for 1st year positions ("overqualified"), and the upper year ones seem set on making me clean bowls and sweep the floor all day rather than assess my colour/blowdrys as they say they will.

    -Frustrated.

Go and see Citizens Information: people should be paying for your trial shifts.

*should* be for sure, but it seems like it's not illegal :( At the very least they should pay you if you don't get the job. I've spent loads in bus fare to go work for them!
