Intrum collecting a debt from other EU country

    Hello,

I have an old student loan from another EU country that was backed up by the government. I have been paying to the other country for over 10 years but it became so difficult to transfer money monthly to other country I just stopped paying and it was transferred to the government who has since contacted Intrum here in Ireland who is now messaging me asking to pay up. How legal is it for them to take over my old student loan and start asking me to pay it? I don't want to pay it as I'm quite poor.

I'm originally from another EU country (not Poland), but also have Irish citizenship.

if you do owe the money, and it seems that you do, then why would it be illegal for them to chase you for money? Is the debt possibly statute-barred? when was the last time you made a payment?

ETA: Its a bit rich claiming to be quite poor when you had a holiday to India recently.

I suppose they can as they have my address. It would've expired already if I never even started paying. Yeah I was in India, a long story.

I would be just interested can they suddenly just demand me to play the whole sum when I've been spending small amounts a month paying it back.

you said in the OP that you stopped paying. so have you stopped paying or have you been paying a lesser amount each month?

I paid lesser amount till it got so difficult to transfer the money that I stopped hoping they'd just leave me alone. I paid then got a month later a letter saying it was paid too late and I had to pay interest because of it, then in the end I started getting multiple of these letters a month, sometimes 2 month late reminders. I became poor then.
