Why are the returning officers such dry sheits?

Always wondered that - the whole place errupting with excitement and they stand there like they have 2 heads or something as if questioning what the fuss is about? Can they not have a smile or something?

Being dour is essential for ageing civil servants.

Because they have to read to a formula. Because they have to be totally impartial. Because they have (generally) seen all this hullabaloo many times before and they know that X's shouts of triumphalism today will be Y's shouts in the next election so basically it's just same ol', same ol'

Its not their business to have an opinion on the election, if they were doing 'delighted and congratulations' as they announced the results there would be mutterings of bias and tampering with the results.

Yeah, needs more newly elected public representatives being hoisted on people's shoulders whooping and hollering.

I'm just waiting for the day that someone reads out the results as a rap.

I'm pretty sure the returning officer in Kerry around 11am yesterday morning started his announcement by saying "Good evening ladies and gentlemen", so they're probably sick of it by the time it gets past the 3rd count.

Why are they even needed bring in an electronic noticeboard. Just as impartial stationary and lifeless. Difference is you'd not have to listen to the robotic speak and look at the dry ****es. Probably be cheaper too.

What now - returning officers are all Muslim

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

They tolerate way too much cheering. I refuse to believe that grown adults are incapable of shutting the fuck up until after all the results have been read out.

I think the OP wants returning officers to announce like this

They're hired for their ability to oversee several counts of thousands of votes using a complex electoral system.

People that are goog at that kind of thing aren't usually known for their gregarious personalities.
