Lack of favourite movies/music

Does anyone else feel really put on the spot when someone asks what movies or music you're into?

They are two types of entertainment I'm fairly ambivalent toward. As in, I enjoy a good movie or song but I don't have any films or artists I'm hugely passionate about. Happy with whatever is on the radio. Could equally be found listening to rap or Irish trad depending on who I'm with.

But for a lot of people, these questions seem like a test of how "cool" you are

I find with music, I tend to have bands or artists I like and I still can't answer what my favourite album is.
I love using Spotify to make my own playlist of their songs rather than listen to albums I might not like in full.

Same goes for individual songs, i love creating playlists for different things and will add songs to this regulary.
I do find I get "stuck" on a song every now and then and will listen to that alot and add it to almost all theplaylists. Current one is "About Today" by The National that I hadn't heard in a while until a few weeks back.

I suppose I could have the conversation in terms of books, but I'd still find it hard to say what my favourite is as it's very difficult to compare a decent biography with a page-turning novel.

I think it does hold some sort of relevance though.

If you're in the beginning of a new relationship its one of the first things you ask the other person, because it tells a lot about somebody I think, not always but, most of the time.

I could be sat happily next to Jamie Dornan for a 5 hour car drive but not if his favourite artist is Niki Minaj and he wanted to listen to that shyte the whole way :p

Love music but to pick a favourite artist or group is almost impossible, i could give a list if ten that i really like but to pick a favourite out of this ten? Impossible, favourite music would also depend in the mood I am in

In the case of movies this is one of those questions which makes my mind go blank for some reason. I'd watch a fairly wide variety of films. Things I've recently seen include Deadpool & Of Gods & Men (about a group of monks in an Algerian monastery). However, whenever someone asks me my favourite movie I suddenly struggle to recall the name of any film whatsoever, good bad or indifferent.

When it comes to music I'd listen to tons of different genres & depending on my mood my favourite could be anything from Miles Davis to Nirvana or Beethoven to 90s hip-hop like Cypress Hill or Snoop Dogg. Way too difficult to pin down.

Hi OP, I get what you mean, I have a definite list in my head of favourite films, music and books, but I don't think I judge if I ask someone what their favourite film/music/book is, even if they are into stuff I am not into.

I remember my OH definitely not having any favourite anything when I asked him at the outset and it didn't bother me at all. I wouldn't let it bother you, you can usually tell if someone has completely opposite tastes to you in things, just by talking to them and even if they do, you can be pleasantly surprised at what you can learn yourself from them.

If you really want to have some kind of 'list' in your own head, have a good think about certain films or music that you were drawn to, at the time they were out, then you have an idea if someone does ask you then.
