A mist all the election coverage the news has come out that Frank Kelly has died aged 77.

Many will remembere him as Fr Jack, though he was around long before that.

His "Christmas Countdown" was a favourite of mine as a kid and his performances on Halls Pictorial Weekly had the grown ups in our house in stitches every week.

'Now Fr Jack, what would you say to a cup?'

    'Feic off cup'

Thanks for the laughs, the Christmas Count down is a true Christmas essential for me.

RIP Frank Kelly, condolences to his family. A great loss I'm sure.

I first saw it & not realising straight away as I was in sky boxsets &
noticed Father Ted & it said "In Memory of Frank Kelly who sadly died on 28th Feb..."

& not only was it Dermot Morgan's 18th anniv, but the last item Frank had done on his IMDB was 69 & Dead, he turned 68 on Dec 28.

Here's a pic Lisha to the words you added, that we all remember fondly,

I just read this on the Dailyedge
Last October it was reported that Kelly was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. He survived bowel cancer in 2011 and was treated for skin cancer last year.
    RIP Frank

gutted, provided me with so many laughs, and you would still use and hear his one liners when out and about.

Even today when i heard myself, (I'm not sure if it's tasteful or not) but I went in to father Ted mode and said

"My God, he drank a whole bottle of Dreamy Sleepy Nighty snoozey snooze"

    RIP father Jack

I was listening to the radio while driving this afternoon, and they played a Father Ted clip (below).
I actually thought it was because of Dermot's anniversary. I was very sad to learn the real reason a few hours later.

Still funny as hell, almost 20 years later (even on the radio).

Yeah, but he's got the name wrong I think. It's Fr. Todd Unctious iirc.

Am I the only one who thinks Kellys contributions to Fr Ted were pretty average.

Sure everyone can quote him but he was hardly used to the best of his comedic abilities in the show.

For me his earlier sketch type work he did is what I'll remember him for.

Father Ted episodes on More4 now :)

    RTE 2 had 2 episodes@11 as well,
Tentacles of Doom featuring the Holy Stone of Clonrichert &
The Plague - The three priests get struck with a plague of rabbits and they find out that Bishop Brennan is coming :D

Ted was really the only fully developed character in the show, the rest were caricatures.
Doughal and Jack had a lot of catchphrases/quotable lines but they didn't really have personalities or developed storylines.
It was amazing that there were 3 generations of Irish comedians working on it.
Frank Kelly - Dermot Kelly - Ardal O'Hanlon.

Frank Kelly had a great career long before Fr. Ted came along. He was great in Halls Pictorial Weekly and I remember him being a mainstay of several RTE shows in the 80's doing his phonebox routines which were hillarious. When it came to playing Fr. Jack I think he wasn't taxed very heavily given his ability but I ton't think there are many comedians out there who could have pulled off the manic craziness of Fr. Jack. Given his contribution to Irish comedy I'm delighted he got the exposure he deserves with a wider audience via Fr. Ted. He was a favourite of mine as a child and it's rare that the things we like as children transition with us as we grow older and still give us so much enjoyment, if not even more. That's how I see Frank Kelly. He was one of the greats and I think his profile will only grow in time once peopel have a chance to look back and reflect on his overall contribution to comedy.

I loved some of his old sketches, especially this one about the Security Guard dealing with a raid. Lots more on Youtube and Spotify (links in the Youtube video)

Very sad loss, so many similarities with Dermot Morgan (apart from having the same anniversary). Both of them were brilliant in Father Ted, but were also hugely successful in different branches of comedy. RIP.
