Internet extender help

I bought yesterday a by miniwifi s500 power line extender. I was told the purpose of this was to extend the internet speed through the electrical outlets. We have virgin 360mb in the living room so I was told that if I connect these to the plug sockets that I would get very similar speeds in the extension. But I was only getting around 40mb through Ethernet connection and the same through wifi from the plug. But if I disconnect the extender and just use wifi from the horizon box then I get about 50-60 mb. So I was in fact getting better speeds from the box in the sitting room than the extender right beside the computer whilst using Ethernet. So my question is why would this be happening when I should be getting better speeds from the extender but I am not. Sorry if I was confusing trying to explain this.

It all depends on the wiring in your home, it's recommended to plug them directly into a socket and not an extension lead as well.

Yeah it was directly into the wall. It's just frustrating.

Any other devices plugged in will degrade the speed. Make sure nothing is plugged in beside them. Of course this is impractical really, you would have to have no other devices at all in the same room.

Some models are better than others also, make sure you upgrade firmware etc too.
