Please don't shoot me down for this, I can build and service computer with my eyes closed but my home DIY expertise is limited to whatever duct tape can hold together.

We recently bought my pparents house. Built in 1995, 4 bed semi D.

We're there a year but obviously with firt time buyers money was very tight so just getting into having a look at the whole situation now.

1st thing, the boiler. It's the original boiler so over 20 years old. Still works and heats the house but I know it can't last much longer, esp in Drogheda (Very Hard Water).

2nd the radiators are also the originals so big chunky and heavy. some get banging hot, some get mildly hot, Ive had to bleed the small one in the bathroom about 3 times in the past year.

3rd the Tank and Pump system. Again all original, Im gussing metal tank.

Im looking for advise, Would I be better replacing the whole lot before they crash and possibly leak and do more damage. Or I see things like power flushing with maybe a new boiler.

I would have to take out a loan either way, but what Im getting at is it like a car. I can service it and parts will most likely fail in dribs and drabs. Or do i replace the car at higher cost but should get much much longer

    Cheers

Some 20 year old boilers can keep going, but are usually very inefficient and costly to run. Depending on the make and model, replacement part may soon become difficult to optain as well and sods law is that it will breakdown at the worse time possible.
If you are in a position to upgrade the system start by doing your research and getting quotes from recommended installers.
You may be in a position, depending on how much you upgrade, to avail of current grants.
Also worth keeping in mind is that most gas boilers today carry a 5 year parts and labour warranty if they have been installed and commissioned correctly and are serviced annually.

Cheers, I'm a massive hypocrite in that I would upgrade technology, cars etc every 2 or 3 years yet prob the most important piece of technology in the house gets neglectd. Im getting it serviced next week so Ill have a chat with the plumber
