Look for the multinationals, large nationals and US companies and you should be ok.
Try and get a job before you go as it can be more pressurised looking from scratch. However, some companies will not interview if you aren't over there.
If you are on a 2 year visa you may have issues getting any decent work as many companies don't want to hire people who may leave after 2 years.
You may be lucky and get sponsorship.

Its a big change from being hounded out of it here to applying to 20+ roles over there and getting no joy yet!

    It can be disheartening alright.
You need to do a lot of research before you go. What companies are hiring, what agencies are best etc. Then you just need to take the plunge and go over there and pound the streets.

Try contacting companies and agencies from here before you leave, telling them you will be over in a few weeks.
Also if you know anybody in the expat community over there start talking to them. Referrals and word of mouth is key.
It pays if you have specialist skills or industry experience.

Remember it only takes one to say yes.

I'm just trawling the web at the minute applying for anything in sight. Do you have any idea of what agencies would be worth a try? Don't know of anyone over there i'll try look towards referrals, good idea. Thanks for helping!

If you don't know anybody in Montreal I'd also look at Toronto and Vancouver. Toronto is better for software jobs.

Plan is to work the way across to Vancouver, not a fixed plan mind you. Stop when I find the right role. Don't want to miss out on Quebec!

It's the oddest French I've ever heard. Sounds like someone butchering French with an American accent.

I struggle in France but can manage so I guess it's just a matter of exposure.

For IT jobs in Montréal, you are better off having English only rather than French only.

In QC, all companies who have more than 100 employees must work in French (many companies don't fully follow this rule). An exception to this are companies who have a nationwide presence and their HQ is in Quebec; they get to choose what language they work in.

If you see a job advertised in French only, then it's pretty certain that the job requires French. If you see a job advertised in both French and English, then there is a high chance that English will suffice for the job. It would be illegal for a company to advertise a job saying English (only) required; they must say bi-lingual, French-English.

Contracting roles are the most abundantly available and 6 months is the typical duration of contracts.

Sending CV's is a waste of time in my opinion; unless you send it to someone who is expecting it, such as when someone recommended you.
