Has anybody heard that Colite are not recognising the 29th of Feb this year for stalking?
Obviously can't fight city hall in relation to the woods but my deer hunting license dose say the 'last day of February' so I'll be going to my private permissions on Monday

My deer license says "29th February, 2016".

So the 29th is part of this season. Never leased a Coilte let so unless there are some stipulations regarding shooting on Mondays/during the week it's a legal day.

    Cass,
That's the way I'd be thinking.
There's no stipulation about specific days on the lease, we are obliged to give advanced notice of intention to hunt to the forest manager to insure no conflict of interests.
This was brought to our attention that Monday was a no go due to it being the 29th. Very remiss of them not to be inline with current license.

All i can say is it's legal and much like the NPWS cannot override legislation (minimum caliber, etc) Coilte cannot override legislation as to when the season ends.

But I think Coillte can say when permission to hunt Coillte land ends.
I don't think they're obliged to let us hunt the full season on their land if they don't want us to.
I need to check what my permission says.

Possibly. Hence the reason i said:

So it's up to the conditions on your let, but from a legal point of view the OP can shoot deer on Monday.

Well there ya go. It's legal but Coilte say they won't allow it. Yet another reason i'd never use a lease. Don't get me wrong i see the need for leases. Not everyone is lucky enough to have private permissions but when you factor in:
    • The price of the leases
    • The "bidding war" that can occur
    • no guarantee of getting one
    • Having to have the HCAP
    • The restrictions Coilte place on the shooting even if you're lucky enough to get a lease
    • Then ignoring the law and telling people that have done all the above "we're not letting you"
I'll be honest. I like my deer stalking, but if it was a choice between the above and giving it up, i'd give it up. Or at the very least start making inroads to getting some private lands to shoot on.

You have all those hoops to jump through, and it costs (quite a bit) at every juncture, to essentially control what Coilte see as vermin that is attacking their investment. Wonder how things would look if no one took out a lease for the next 3 to 5 years.

Thing with some Coilte Letts I have been on is they don't give 2 fcuks about the hunter. Coilte are happy to have your money alright.

Say the person that has the lease pays €5k/year, to the forester that's just 1 lorry load of timber. All they want is the timber cut and trucked out of the forest. One season the machines were in cutting the timber, so no deer shot that year but the lease was still paid.

If it was me I'd go out, Look at it this way.

How much did you pay for your Lett this season??
How many days did you get to go out?
Divide cost/by days out = cost per day

Typically at 12 days out @€;600 season that could be €40 a day.

And then people wonder why some sell deer by the trailer load.

I've heard, and i stress heard (not verified) that leases can cost between €600 to €4,000+. So the cost can go, as CliveJ pointed out, between €15 per day to €100+ per day based on cost of lease and the fact that the person goes out every day of each weekend for the entire season.

If you don't go out that much then it can cost as much as €40 to €400+ per day. That is seriously expensive. I understand, and please correct me if i'm wrong, that most of the expensive leases are bought by a syndicate or group of people to lessen the cost per person. Even at that it's still expensive shooting when you factor in travel, cost of lease, HCAP exam, etc.

didn't pay that much now but it is still expensive when you add up all.
Some leases costs 1000s but the cost is split between stalkers.

find it very annoying we cant go on Monday
