The suspect is a very senior member of the Republican movement and lived in South Dublin - but is originally from Belfast and has a UK passport.

Police in Spain arrested the fugitive over the series of alleged sexual assaults here in the nineties.

Right before the general election. Good to see justice is being served. The victim of the abuse was abused from age 9 to 11 back in the 1990s.

I don't care about the abusers political beliefs. I hope the victim gets the treatment that they deserve.

It won't cost Sinn Fein one vote.

You would have thought Irish media would have published his details and alerted the public before now that this dangerous man was on the loose? They regularly give updates on Larry Murphys movements.
“The detainee was the subject of four arrest warrants issued last January by a judge in Dublin.”

He's not convicted yet and could sue?

Must be the only man in West Belfast with a British passport.

Let justice be done and I hope it is for any victims. But I can't help but feel that it's the kind of convenient political timing that even Josef Goebbels would be proud of.

If this person is "ONE of the IRA's most senior commanders in the Republic" according to the Indo, I assume the Gardai will be looking for him to be extradited back and charged in any case?

When Gerry said that the haven't gone away, he must have thought Spain was in west Belfast.

Tom McFeely became one of her majesty's loyal subjects when the banks came looking for their money back.

Let's hope he gets a fair trial. If he is convicted, then you can hope he gets jail.

So people on here are clear. It's only since the GFA in 1999 that all people in the six counties are entitled to Irish passports so it is not beyond the realm of possibilities that the vast majority of republicans at some stage held a British passport. There is a lot of loyalists that travel on Irish passports also.

There is a moratorium on the media in place from 12pm tomorrow so the media and government probably can't believe their luck that they have a chance to lay another abuse scandal onto Sinn Fein with of course Sinn Fein not able to reply.

This man like everyone else is entitled to due process and is at present an innocent man. But the timing of this stinks, I thought it was already dodgy putting the sentencing of Tom Murphy on polling day.

"six counties"; "26 counties". That sounds familiar.

Just wondering about people commenting on the timing: Spanish authorities arrested him last night to coincide with the Irish General Election? :)

To be fair, just as there will be outlets focusing more on his IRA membership than the child abuse allegations, focusing on the timing and the election rather than the child abuse allegations isn't much better.

People commenting on the timing are merely showing their ignorance. A European Arrest Warrant isn't granted overnight. Their is a long process by the requesting country which could have started 12 months ago. The Spanish authorities, once they receive the warrant have a limited time to execute it. The timing is coincidental to the election but welcome. Anything that shows up SF for the shower of hypocritical and in many instances, criminal thugs, they are, is welcome in my book.

This is not a jibe at republicanism which is a legitimate political movement. Can any one be surprised that the IRA attracts psychopaths and other violent criminals.

Sinn Fein are a sensitive bunch. If they're not complaining about the print media being against them, it's the broadcasters or it's the courts or it's the PSNI and now it's the Spanish police. Wah wah wah wah, you're all mean to us.
