Dilema with NCT and trade in value?

Looking for advice on this one please...

I have a 2002 Nissan Primera which has an NCT which expires at the end of March 2016. I had it tested a couple of weeks ago and it failed (approx €200-400 for repairs required) - I'm not willing to spend any more money on it at this stage. I was going to use it as a trade in on a used car with a dealer, I'd imagine I'd only get about 1k doing this. Would I still be able to use it as a trade in after the NCT expires or will a dealer not be interested at all?

Obviously my other option would be to find a car and trade the primera in before the NCT expires but I don't want to rush into doing that. I'd prefer to take my time. I have a loan of another car to drive in the mean time for the next 3 months.

I do have another option, to sell the primera privately before the NCT expires and try get some cash for it.

Any suggestions welcome please as time is not on my side :)

I really don't understand the fixation on the trade-in. Unless you're a complete ignorant, drive in a sty that has never be serviced, you'd get much better deal if you sell it yourself... Fix and NCT it, then sell.

I changed my car twice, each time I sold it for at least twice the money I was offered by the dealer...

Looking on Donedeal you would be lucky to get €1000 for one in good condition with a long NCT. Yours is likely in its current condition worth sub €500 if even that. If it was me and you want to keep things super cheap I would buy another Primera for about €1000 and sell your current one for €500, you can take any good parts like tyres/wheels from your own and swap with the one you buy.

    This one looks good...

You've about 5 weeks of NCT, I don't think that'll make much difference one way or another to a dealer. For one thing, most dealers will find it easier than you to get the car NCTed, since they do it all the time, so if he believes it's in OK condition it's not a big deal whether there's a really short NCT in place or one just expired. Equally, dealer unlikely to buy and sell your car while the current NCT is valid, so dealer will have to factor in getting test done one way or another (who'd buy a car off a dealer with 1 month NCT without asking if they'd put it through the NCT first?).

You can sell it privately after the NCT is out, you just can't drive it at that time. Not sure how the value of the car is affected (obviously reduced, but how much).

The key thing I would say to focus on is that if you tested the car today you'd have a 13 month NCT expiring March 2017, which is very attractive to private buyers, and probably to dealers too. If you let the NCT expire, and then you (or new buyer/dealer) test it after 2 months gap, then it'll only get a 10mth NCT since the expiry date isn't pushed back by the gap.

for a garage a 02 primera is a trade car and is worth next to nothing either way.

Cheers for all the advice lads, gives me plenty to think about. I think at this stage I just want to get rid of the primera and move on without spending more cash on it so will try the private sale route.

E200-400 is nothing, unless you buy new, you are going to constantly be putting money into a car. Better the devil you know... think of the cost and hassle of selling, going out viewing new cars. then if you have to borrow for the new car, the interest etc. Trading to save money makes no sense financially or even hassle wise in my opinion... what did it fail on? I can recommend a mechanic in Dublin who is very reasonable, if you decide to repair...
