    Hi everyone
I thinking of buy a 1994 R32 Skyline GTR and wondering how much roughly the insurance will be. It will appear second car so won't be doing much milage. Say about 5,000 a year.

Is classic insurance expensive and apart from road tax anything else I should think of

something over 200 euro a year. Maximum 4000 miles (or you can choose 6000). Also you need to be a member of a classic car club (10-25e a year?)

    Ring First Ireland.

Get a quote first before buying, as its a Jap car it might not qualify as a classic...

My '95 Starlet coildn't be insured by anyone, because its a "mass-produced Japanese car..."

If you do find an insurance company that'll give you classic car insurance for it, please let me know so I can change to them as well. Thanks!!

That's strange. BMW E30 for example was a mass produced car as well and it's not a problem.

That's what I thought, my argument was (still is) that which car isn't mass-produced this day and age...? It seems though to be a thing about Jap cars, at least that's what the man with First Ireland said. They were ok with quoting me but their underwriter refused it when I wanted to buy the classic insurance... Same thing with all the other usual suspects.

Just bought a 1994 Celica GT4 and had alot of trouble getting a classic policy. Eventually got it from campion insurance for 300 but only because i have 1979 Mg midget insured with them also. Could not get a quote from most companies.

    Celica GT4, very nice.

But I'm sure all the companies would do classic insurance for a Ford Escort 1300 (Just picked it at random)

Is it the fact that these are high performance cars?

I am not sure if that's the case but form my recent policy hunt (for my 1990 E30) I came to a conclusion that those people on the other side of the line are not into cars at all and have no idea what is going on out there. It seems to me that to them it's only a reg number that matters and the engine size. They most likely don't even know how a Nissan Skyline looks like (definitely didn't see one personally). Years ago I had to spell words "Reliant Scimitar" into the phone because the guy had no idea what I am talking about. And that was Carole Nash classic car specialist insurance company. Well... Probably it doesn't matter what the name is once it's old enough and a second car. They would probably insure an imported car from Greenland called "Purple Snowflake" without even questioning the name if you would convince them it's an actual car name.

I just checked the paperwork now and it says Reliant Semitar.

    What else to say...

There making good money now would set you back around 20k on the road I estimate .....

Yeah I have allowed that sort of cash. Still think they are good value at that. Think the market is at the bottom for these
Will only be a third car so won't be used much

Nah, my Starlet is a 75 bhp yoke, the First Ireland man admitted it was because it's a Japanese car that their underwriter refused it, as a Jap car "isn't a classic."

The Escort would be no problem though...

Same here, last year a quote for my 1995 Mercedes C220 D was €220 comp from FBD. Massed produced and just within the vintage insurance bracket

Seeing as it was nowhere near ready for the road I insured my 1989 300ZX twin turbo instead, for €150 with FBD. Mostly driven at the weekends and to potter to the shop to get a pint of milk with the bread

The bottom was maybe 2-3 years ago for r32 gtrs.

Well it's not something I'm going to flip quickly, I have had a Golf GTI Mk1 since 1994.

Its unbelievable saying a Japanese car cant be a classic, how small minded. Anyone know who the underwriter who said this is?

The guy at First Ireland I spoke to said FBD is their underwriter. First Ireland were happy to quote and get a classic car insurance sorted for me, but FBD apparently later rejected in the grounds its a Japanese mass-produced car...

Sounds a bit like nonsense to be honest, but perhaps its Toyota Starlets that aren't considered classics...?

And we know that BMW's never do this.

its the driver, not the car

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

No. It's the driver + the car. In other words, real life => statistics. If a certain driver + car combo is proving to cost a lot in insurance claims, this combo will become very expensive, or impossible to insure.

I am sure there are responsible R32 GTR owners around, but a lot of others have screwed it up for them...

Well in the wrong side of 40 so hopefully should be ok.
