Newstalk Syndicated News Service Tech Problems

I was listening to a local radio station this morning who take Newstalk's news service early moning and from 7p.m. onwards. Anyway this morning at 8 a.m. the bulletin started and on the first story the newsreader said something like "X has this report". Then there was silence for a few seconds and then the newsreader came back in and said "I'm sorry we're having problems with our system and are unable to bring you the rest of the bulletin this hour". Then silence.

The station I was listening to was starting live programmes after this bulletin so about 5 seconds later an ad came on.

My question is surely the newsreader is reading from a paper script rather than off a screen and could have continued to read the bulletin even if she wasn't able to play clips. Just seems odd if they are supplying this service to local stations around the country and have no backup plan when systems fail.

No, the scripts are on screen and the system most likely crashed, losing the whole bulletin.

Well they should print it off as a back up then. Simply not good enough to blame the computers

A lot of wasted paper for a problem that happens only once or so every few years.

Well it's amateur hour any ways I suppose so one more issue to the list. They don't seem to be able to time bulletins properly and never have.

Having the scripts on the computer (probably using the Burli software) allows for ultra last minute edits, cuts down on paper, allows other newsreaders to use them, and is generally just way more convenient. Saying they're amateurs just because one bulletin goes wrong out of hundreds is way OTT IMO. And the timing is more down to the shows around the news tbh, especially on NT Breakfast (which is where this particular bulletin originated.
