Humanity's self loathing

Why do we, as a people, seen to be so fond of self loathing? Spend five minutes on any social media site and you'll find numerous examples of people calling humanity "selfish", "destructive" and "evil", why do so many people love focusing on the negatives? As a people we've advanced hugely in the past few hundred years, society is far more altruistic now than it was then, so why do so many people think we're slowly degenerating into aggressive animals who are doomed to destroy ourselves before the end of the century? I don't get it, people in general aren't bad, not more so than any other animals.. Thoughts?

The actions of this and recent previous generations of humans have reduced the planets capacity to support human life, to the extent that if human behaviours don't change drastically within the next two generations, that the human race will not longer exist on Earth. The consumer preferences of humans lucky enough to live in the developed world often foster exploitation and deprivation for those in the poorest countries.

It's pretty selfish and destructive to wipe out the world for future generations, or to buy chocolate that uses the labour of child slaves to harvest the cocoa, as an example. I think that's what most of that sort of self-criticism refers to, our actions as a species and not as individuals.

"Holy mother of lantern divine mother a Jaysus di poor creatures we're leaving behind."
    "What?"
"Someone parked in the Parent and Child spaces with no kids. WHAT'S BECOMING OF US!? What's happening to HUMANITY!?"

As great as a lot of stuff we have here in the developed world is, a lot of it comes at a price that we choose to ignore.

Because if we don't focus on them, they won't get fixed.

Like anyone in the developed world is going to give up their laptops and starbucks.
Laptops in Starbucks at a window seat - the saddest people.

I don't like coffee so I don't drink Starbucks. I instantly feel like a great fella altogether now after reading this thread.

I hate shopping for clothes because it's so boring but I now find I can look like an enlightened being by saying I don't do it because of all the child slaves labouring away in sweat shops.

Well, I agree with this. Much of the unnecessary crap Western society chooses to bore itself with comes at disproportionate, ridiculous cost.
