    Dear people of ireland,
if your car is 2005 its 11 years old,
If your car is 2006 its 10 years old
If your car is 2007 its 9 years old

If your petrol car has 200,000 miles on the clock , its not worth the same money you bought it for minus the v.a.t when it was new, it most likey needs a new engine ,shock absorbers probably a visit to the scrap yard in the near future.

What about 2008? How old is a 2008 car now?

Are you a FG or Labour candidate stating the obvious?

Do you work for the car industry and are looking for more new car sales?

Like, OMG, do we really have to canvass here, it looks dangerous with all these bangers of cars, can't we just throw the leaflets out of our brand new cheap tax derv and give em a blast of soot as we make our escape?

Just because a car has 200,000 miles doesn't mean it needs a new engine. Engine could be perfect...

Any car unless an investment car is probably no longer worth the same money it cost minus VAT when it was new?
Thats common knowledge, cars depreciate as they age and accumulate mileage.
Cars don't just turn to scrap at X years old, if proper maintenance is carried out then they can run almost indefinately.
Its when people get a car and think that it needs nothing more than petrol or diesel put into it and the key turned that problems start. Cars are not magic they need supervision, they use oil, water and wearable parts like clutches, brakes, tyres and suspension all need replacement along the way.
Failure to attend to worn parts can lead to other parts being damaged or failing.
The problem with a lot of car owners is they never rode a motorcycle.

Maybe we should get the Green Party back to finish the job on cars older than 2008, and no my 2007 car is not a banger. I can manage the blast of soot from my removed DPF

The Greens can too. In fact your car probably emits less CO2 now after removing that restriction, so basically you are well on your way to Gormley Green-ness Level 10, because mercury-free lightbulbs that emit a healthy light instantly are one of the greatest threats facing mankind, and CO2 must be reduced AT ANY COST. Well, as long as there's a way to work a tax on it and basically achieve very little environmental benefit while poisoning children and old people. Because GREEN!

Everything has a value though right?

    And market's clear right?

So, if these 2005-2007 cars are overpriced then the sellers can't sell, and the buyers can't buy so economics 101 (I'm no wolf of wall street here) implies that sellers will reduce prices to match the buyer bids?

I've had a car for sale a couple of weeks and am progressively reducing price by 250e. It's at a level now where I'm getting genuine interest.

At some point, I'll get it away.

I'm sure you're frustrated by the asking on those 2005-2007 cars, but, why not just ring the owners and say I'll come and view but only if you're willing to deal at a price of x.

The penny may drop that the seller needs to be more realistic?

No sense in just venting about it on boards, put it up to the seller to get their act in gear!

Yes thats true , its basic economics alright and the fact many sellers have got no replies or at most an offer to swap will create a more harmonious balance.

Btw I was looking for a friend who was equally bemused at the prices on alot of vehicles, we understand that some cars may have alot of extras and high specs, but for people with base models please dont compare your car to high spec values.

Any thats my rant over, I just bought 2005 nissan almera for 10000.

What mileage, engine, tyre condition and brand, nct status etc did you get for your 1k?

I don't think it's fair to compare cars based on asking prices alone.

A well minded 11 year old car is still probably worth more than an abused 9 year old car.

A good car and a newer car aren't necessarily the same thing.

For example, you could buy a car that has emissions issues for 1k. But the work required to rectify that is prices in.

I think Irish buyers are unsophisticated generally and just look for price at the expense of quality. But such is the society we live in.

I bought recenlty 2006 Peugeot 407 1.8 petrol, 60k miles, for my wife.
    Paid just over €1.5k.
Seems plenty of car for the money, so I don't think all people are asking too much for their 10 year old cars.
