Lads, I've moved a lot of posts/ questions/ answers relating to the new drug testing checkpoints. I understand there will be crossover between the two but could we try and keep any heavy discussion on the matter to the dedicated thread (below) and keep this one for Garda tweets.

If that taxi is legitimate it's a sad state of affairs.

Wrong for driving around with no documents yes, but being self employed be can't get welfare (i think).

    Tweet from this morning:

185 people arrested for driving under the influence this 4 day B/Hol. An increase of 48% on Easter period 2016 (125 arrested in 2016).

Was passing there yesterday and saw the taxi parked up in the bus stop. No driver to be seen. Amazed they left the taxi plate number on which is good. That guy should never be able to drive a taxi again but seems they can have all sorts of criminal back grounds.

I've seen him driving and he is lethal how he goes around in the Prius.

Assuming this years figure of 185 is not just doubled and is real and last years was really doubled, then the percent increase is far more than 48%. A lot of ifs and buts in that !

Last years figure was 126. 48% increase on last years figure is 60 additional detections. 48% is the correct figure.

The 48% is correct but he's referring to the recent scandal where the number of tests conducted were found to be doubled nation wide.

I'd say given the recent controversy these figures are real.

i've never seen so many cops on the road in my life since the news broke.

It can only be positive though that they are visible.

Checkpoint's all over the place but it shouldn't just be that there needs to be more on the streets and I believe a sh1t load more on bikes as they can cover areas better and see more also been higher up.

Driving around in a car texting and on social media and on private phone calls they aren't much use.

They should go around on bikes unmarked, if that were possible or would safety be an issue there?

Also like in the uk in unmarked trucks (tractor unit only).

    Use of buses also.

Unmarked wouldn't be an issue and even marked not a problem as been seen will put the Messages out we are here and watching.

Push bike numbers should be increased along with motorbikes.

Sometimes the visibilty issue gives people a chance to avoid. with the unmarked you'd usually have no chance. but in some cases the unmarked cars stick out big time.

Unmarked buses as in use them on a service and try and catch people taking drugs via onboard cctv etc?

The best way to catch people is in unmarked bangers. Nobody would suspect a guard in an old civic or avensis. The problem is, everyone knows they're in a blue/white i40 or a navy ondeo (well here anyway). Spotted one the last and before I took a proper look at it, I knew it had a guard in it. Think motorbikes and bicycles are a good idea too. Mainly at traffic light junctions.

They tried that before and decided bangers were too dangerous after a few nasty accidents. Proper cars only, equipped for the Gardai so they can perform their duties with all their required kit. They need safe cars that can be used for pursuit, and for stopping those they are pursuing. If someone can spot an unmarked car, then they will still spot a banger with two heavy lads in it.

Odds on the drivers being yellow platers from across the line.

Ferrari or the equivalent or a bike?

The vast majority of cars can reach that speed on a long run. Whether it is safe to do that speed is another matter. Given how the vast majority of Irish drivers drive without using mirrors, it is a stupid speed.

Its only about 115 mph in old money.

Its mad years ago you would have a bit of leeway.

In mph maybe 5 to 10 mph.

Now it seems 5 to 10 km/h is the let's get you speed.

I dont think i have seen one tweet with someone in a 120 zone doing 125 or 130.

    Nonsense statement.

The lowest I've seen is 132 and that was with several others (no tax etc). I reckon the driver would've been cautioned if not for the other offences

The majority of tickets for speeding on motorway is 140+.

Seems like an Irish jag? Police also seem to be in the twin turbo insignia.

It's a good job they were chasing him on the M1 then and not a road with bends :D

I got caught doing similar speed one time many moons ago,it was at 3am on a bank holiday weekend on the M7,i got a bollocking and points - i was lucky. I wouldn't expect the same look doing it at 7 30pm though.
