Contact some local Plant and Tool Hire companies.

How big (heavy is the car)?

Do you hold BE licence and have a car with high towing capacity?

I hold a uk licence. I think I can tow a trailer upto 750kg on that and 3500kg combined weight .the car I'm collecting is a saab 93 coupe so not really small and I'd either tow it with the hilux or my 9-5

A trailer 'up to 750kg' (gross vehicle weight) wouldnt cover any car transporter trailer. That gvw would only cover an average single-axle domestic trailer.

Afaik, if you use the HiLux you would need category B+E. If you use the Saab (+ a small car transporter trailer) you MAY be covered within category B.

I emphasis you MAY be covered - you would need to confirm the gvw of both the car and trailer (+ load) combined.

    Also:

    - Many companies wont hire such a trailer to you unless you have category B+E on your licence ...PLUS

    - You would need to inform you car insurance company to ensure you are covered to tow a car transporter trailer.

It may be easier to just find a car recovery company who could transport the car on the back of their truck (e.g. a local company in DL may be dropping a vehicle to CN and returning empty ....hence you could get a good rate with them to collect your car in CN).

    Jeysus, another silly requirement???

I though every policy providing third party cover (which is essentially every car policy) is valid for towing trailers or caravans (obviously provided they are within legal weight limits).

Why would you need to inform them then?

They cover domestic trailers, a car transporter is not a domestic trailer. Have you verified that towing a caravan doesn't need to be informed? All my other cars had tow hitches and when I informed of the modification they always asked what I was towing, which was a domestic trailer. There's a lot more risk towing a caravan /car transporter / horse box, I've never seen a vehicle flipped by a domestic trailer.

    Well, typical Irish insurance bullsh1t...

When I fit towbar to my car, I informed insurer about that, to which I was told that it doesn't make any diffrerence in premium, as I'm covered to tow trailers anyway.

I didn't ask if I was covered to tow only specific kind of trailers as it would never even cross my mind it would be possible that it coveres only domestic trailers while it doesn't cover some other types even if they fulfill weight requirements.

It just my brain is not complex enough to understand and predict Irish insurance requirement and tricks behind all that insurance sh1te.

But I'm not arguing with you.
After what I've heard here on boards, I believe everything is possible when it comes to insurance in Ireland.

Many insurance policy documents mention that a driver only has coverage to tow a 'domestic trailer'. Perhaps your doesnt. I've been aware of this limitation since I started driving over two decades ago. I recently wanted to use a twin-axle domestic/builders trailer and had to get that added to my policy.

(I'm not arguing with you btw :))

It's not just Ireland which has restrictions on towing
Don't assume your car insurance covers you for towing a caravan and/or trailer

In Spain any trailer over 750kg needs it's own insurance

^^^ And in Spain it seems trailers over 750kg also need -

    - Valid ITV (NCT)
    - Valid Road Tax

I would be careful with regards to insurance, and would want it to specify towing is covered in the policy wording, and to what extent. Had this come up as an issue a couple of years back before bringing a 12x6 box trailer to the south of France. Towing the trailer was covered but the trailer and contents were uninsured, a requirement in some parts. If it's not in the wording, then it's not covered.

I'd find it difficult to see how a private motor policy would include towing a car transporter as standard. To be honest it's not a suitable job for smaller cars

Cheers for the advice all. Opted for the recovery in the end and got a very good price to have it brought to me.
