Maybe someone has come across this before. I've an 8wk old suck who is losing big patches of hair on his back. Is there anything serious in this. He is in with 3 more but they seem fine.

You hardly used a pour-on on him. Could be mange. I thought about ringworm but you normally see it around the nose/heads first.

Would it be too young for ringworm? Would give it a shot of multi vitamin

No pour on. Bovipast is only thing he has got yet. Will do them for blackleg once I let them out. He eating fine and lively out otherwise.

I second whelan with the multi vitamin, it won't do him any harm even if it doesn't cure him. I recall a couple of calves being patchy here but don't remember what we gave them. Could be a weird allergy to a mite/certain straw either. It's a guessing game from behind the laptop!

If you reeeeally want to find out you could prob send a skin scraping into the vets.

is there another calf chewing at him?

if he has does of scour for 2 or 3 days he may lose hair after it but it would start at tail. as above a does of multivitamin will do the trick. there is Hair oil from a company called ORLDEN its brilliant stuff on older cattle anyhow

Vet reckons sunshine will do the trick. Can anyone recommend a mulitvit?

you get a bottle for around 8 euro from co-op or vet, 5mls should do, it stings them a good bit

Would copper defiency be a possible problem? Hair usually withered looking but don't think it falls out,
But a shot of blue copper drench could be done as well as multivitamin, for the sake of it.

I was with a farmer a few days ago who had something similar calf was missing all his hair around his hips and back. From memory I think he said that someone had told him that it was something the calf has picked up off chickens like a tick or something it would come back when at grass. in fairness there was a good few chickens roaming around.not that this helps but tough I would add this info.

We had one similar few years ago, but it was after a scour it seemed to take off. Tufts of hair from shoulders pulling out in patches.. If ya rubbed up against him his hair would rub off onto your clothes.

Vet was in testing and she couldn't see any cause as skin was clean underneath. TBH she said she had little hope as he was a bit under the weather..

He did come ok (ish), but never reached potential, always seemed weak and lack of thrive. I always expected to hear he died suddenly, but did make it to the mart to cover himself.
