Peugeot's new BlueHDi diesel engine

I see Peugeot are using Addblue in this model and are claiming a suprising efficiency of over 70mpg. That’s the 1.6 308 Im talking about.

This must be class leading, has anyone any experience of this engine ? Is it also used in the Ford Focus ? Anyone else using it ?

While Peugeot had good diesel engines in their time, the rest of their cars was fair at best soft suspension faulty electrics.

this bluehdi engine would have to be a strong contender for anyone buying a new diesel. Does it have a DPF to contend with and another fluid injected into that to clean it during regeneration ?

Less things to go wrong too with Addblue for emission control rather than EGR

    * AdBlue (Urine injection) is used to reduce the NOx emissions. The reduction happens in the catalytic converter
    * DPF is used to control the soot and other big carbon-based particles emissions. It is a separate device from catalytic converter and process is separate.

To cause even more confusion, there are two types of DPF out there - wet one (usually referred as FAP /Filtre a Particule/ - as the wet filters were fitted mainly by French producers) and dry one. Wet one uses additional injections, while the dry one needs to be cleaned by heating it up. I don't know if the wet are still being installed.

    * EGR - exhaust gas recirculation - is a valve that would feed some of the exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber. It is done for various reasons - mainly to reduce the emissions, especially the NOx again.

Using Urine Injections does not mean the EGR is not there... Newer emission norms put additional pressure on NOx emissions and it is necessary to use all means available to reduce NOx.

I've been driving one recently (120bhp bluehdi, claimed 90mpg!) and it is lovely to drive - 6 speed box. Nippy lower down, 6th gear very quiet. AdBlue tank is next to the spare wheel. The interior of the 308 itself is a quality grade above any other Peugeots I've driven. The 92bhp diesel seems to be the most popular in this country, for the relatively small extra cost I don't know why people aren't opting for the Bluehdi.

I am a bit concerned about the cost of this AdBlue stuff however.

The manual says that the DPF can be cleaned by a bit of consistent driving at 60km/h, which is a lower speed than I've seen mentioned for other cars.

Marketing, but with a bit of technical detail:

Looks like fap fluid (eolys) is gone now, colostomy bag replaced with a piss bucket.

How much does it cost to refill the urea tank on these things, and how often does it need doing?

It's costing us 50 - 60 euro to get the Adblue tank refilled on an A6 by Audi, and it lasts roughly 11,000km between fills.

It's a total ballache to get this stuff at a reasonable price currently.

Looks like a total nightmare, I think any fuel savings will be offset by large parts and repair costs along with replacement car rental. These cars sound good in theory but in reality the very fact that it originates in France is enough to keep me well away from it.

Apparently it can be ecologically sourced from pig urine. So the Danes will probably be happy. Muslims being blasted with pig urine fumes.... not so much.

They have big containers of it in my local topaz ? All the lorries use it .. no idea how much it is though.
Can you fill the add blue tank yourself or do you have to go to the audi garage ??

The connector for the trucks is different to the cars, and the flow rate is too high too, so you can't use them. Eventually, there will be AdBlue pumps at Fuel stations (I reckon) but until then there's a bit of an issue.

Main dealers are charging through the nose for something that's actually about 34c a litre. Topaz have 1.9L bottles available for about 12 quid each - no idea how big the Peugeot AdBlue tank is, but the A6 tank is 17 Litres (optional 24 litre tank on the new A4), so roughly €100 to fill an A6 that way.

We're working with some Fast Fit branches to supply AdBlue at a much cheaper rate than main dealers.

As a warning, this stuff is highly corrosive. If spilled on paintwork it will rot not only the paint but the metal underneath. Some cars have the AdBlue tank with the fuel tank, just over the rear wheel - spill on the wheel and it will eat through the alloys.

I've heard a story that a BMW X5 had to have all the front passenger suspension replaced as the AdBlue tank in there is under the bonnet, so the AdBlue spilled over when being filled, on to the suspension arms and ate through the metal.

It's going to become a lot more prevalant in most new vehicles unfortunately, and until it's available right next to the diesel pump for the cars, it's just going to continue to be a right pain in the @rse.

Who knew being "blasted with piss" could be so dangerous outside of boards.ie?
