Toyota Warranty not honoured

    Really annoyed😡
What's the position with Toyota Powertrain warranty?
Bought a 2008 land cruiser from previous owner who had a 1 yr warranty from July 2015.
Have now discovered jeep needs full set of injectors. Toyota say warranty only applies to previous owner. Is this correct? Surely warranty is on the vehicle for the period specified regardless of who owns it.
    Thoughts please !

Toyota dealer cover warranty isn't transferable, simple as that. It's in the warranty terms. Car is 8 years old so well outside manufacturers warranty.

This jeep was sold in a Toyota garage last July and given a full Toyota one year warranty. The warranty refers to the "Registered owner" not the owner specified at July 2015.

Have you read the terms in the warranty booklet?

    Edited because wrong!

Actually its worth clarifying, do you mean the previous owner bought an aftermarket warranty, or that the previous owner only bought the vehicle himself last July and got a years sales warranty at the time?

I'm guessing the latter, I did think it strange any dealer would give aftermarket warranty on an 8 year old car. Doesn't change anything for you though, you still have never had any contract with that dealer.

Id expect it's Toyota Dealer Cover.
Backed by Toyota Ireland, a bumper to bumper 12 month warranty that can be claimed in any Toyota dealer.
It's probably the best used car warranty out there, but from what I remember from selling them, they don't transfer.

I spent many a year as a warranty manager in several main dealers. I know the official BMW after market warranty if provided from BMW through the dealer it is attached to the car and not the owner. Every other after market warranty is to the owner and the car.

Is this a Mapfree warranty or the likes?

Edit: I should have said - every other warranty that I'm aware of. I know less than nothing about the specifics of Toyota's warranties.

They will sell that to an 8 year old car? Thats interesting, sounds like a losing proposition to me but I assume Toyota know the costs themselves.

With that in mind then google tells me this.

To be fair, there's little that goes wrong with cruisers in general, so it's relatively low risk, depending on the mileage.

I would be surprised if the warranty was transferable tbh, and I'd want to see it in writing before getting too hopeful

On another note, OP can I ask why it needs injectors? And was it Toyota that said this?

That one is a different warranty. IIRC the warranty cost about €200 or so to the dealer.

Things do go wrong with landcruisers but unlike with landys owners keep quiet about it - not the same community there is with landys !

Maybe a stupid question but could the previous owner bring it back and be covered, or would they be checking ownership details?

Its a common problem, injectors on d4d engines, not just limited to Land Cruisers. Just ask any decent breaker for d4d injectors and see if there are any in stock

For example here is a discussion about Land Cruiser injectors

I understand the injector seal issue. Toyota issued a recall for units built form 04 to 07. I suppose that's why I was asking the OP where the diagnosis came from, a mechanic who has tested it, or someone on the Internet, as the later engines haven't had the same issues (nor did the 01-03)

Whether it's a common problem or not, injectors can still be the issue

Is there any modern diesel out there that doesnt have injector problems !!!

    Thanks guys for replies.
Yes, Toyota say it needs injectors.
Yes, they refuse to transfer existing warranty.
    Toyota sucks imho.

power train warranty doesn't cover injectors anyway even if it was transferable (which it is not transferable after reading t&c's). its Toyota premium warranty which would. exchange Toyota injectors are approx €220 each... ex vat.

p.s probably be worth checking the fuel for contamination before replacing injectors. i.e take down and drain fuel tank.

Of course they can (and are in this case).. trying to get facts from the OP before rushing to judgement. Heaven forbid someone on a web forum doesn't rush to give advice on half the knowledge or an assumption.

Unfortunately OP, I don't think you'll get anywhere with this unless there's a written account of a transferable warranty.

    .

It's not their fault you didn't read the t&cs

it's the sellers fault If they led you to believe the warranty transferred

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 Tis I

    Alls well that ends well.
Guy that sold it is going to cover the cost of replacing injectors. Top marks to him for being honourable.
    Thanks again for input.
