woke up this morning to a dull Monday morning drudge to find 2 brown revenue letters waiting for us... oh great what do we own now!!! that was our first words of the day.

upon opening the letters, myself and my wife found a check for both of us with a nice refund,

We didn't expect any refund at all to be honest so I don't know why they sent them.

they have dates of 2012/13/14/15 with the amounts owed from those dates next to them and says Pay as you earn.

is this normal? what did we get them are they real?

If you're not sure, call. They could be yours or they could be in error.

Recently I had checks start to come to me from the US tax service (the IRS). My name, my address. I cashed the first one because it was similar to a tax return I was actually expecting. Then others started to come. It turned out none of them belonged to me; someone's bankruptcy (!!!) got mixed up with my records. Ten or twelve phone calls, an internal investigation, and me repaying the amount of the first check later, and all's sorted.

Did you request P21s recently or send in claims for health expenses etc?

Yeah a P21 is a balancing statement and checks if there's any tax/usc owing to you or Revenue.

It's probably correct but if you're worried give them a call.

A P21 is a balancing statement for a particular tax year. It shows taxable income with tax paid. The result will be balanced (correct tax paid), underpayment ( too little tax paid) and overpayment (paid too much tax for the year) Any balancing statement with a result of overpayment will show if the refund will be paid to you or if it will be offset against taxes owing from some other underpayment.

In short check, the front page of your P21's to ensure they are in order. Also login to your PAYE anytime account and tick to receive correspondence electronically and input your bank details to stop getting paper correspondence.
