So it seems that UCD200 was false and was known to be based on rumour. Unfortunately these type of situations, perhaps understandably (though not right), start somewhat of a trial by social media.

Evidence is secondary and any finding against the public opinion is treated with suspicion and its classed as convenient if no findings emerge.

How do we balance compassion and justice? A rape victim should be believed, but so too should the accused until one is proven to be guilty or a liar.

What happens the liar/rapist is another kettle of fish.

We just apply critical faculties as we do with every story we hear. And then our position may change as more evidence emerges.

If my friend says he has disproved the Big Bang theory, I might say that sounds ridiculous and disbelieve it. If 10 media outlets carry a story that a girl was raped in Carlow last night, that sounds plausible and I'd accept it. My stance might be wrong each time, and as the story develops I might change. We process this stuff all the time.
