For people who have worked comission paid jobs what has it been like, in call centre or retail outlet ? How is it calculated on top of salary?

It really depends on the role, most have a basic salary of minimum wage and then commission is based on reaching a target rather than commission per sale. But retail stores like currys do have commission based on actual sales, but selling a TV worth €400 might get very little commission compared to selling the extended warranty for €70.

If you are good at selling and have a good product/service to sell, then commission based sales can be excellent, but likewise, the uncertainty and ever depressing rates, ever increasing targets can make these roles very stressful.

I'd wonder if tax brackets will be your enemy. In other words, if you're on one tax bracket, how much can you gain before getting put into a higher tax bracket, and ending up with less money?

If you go into a higher tax bracket, you wouldn't end up with less money...you only pay the higher tax rate on the portion of income in the higher band.

I worked on commission in a call centre environment. Just be prepared that if you are succeeding and getting over the average payout they are likely to change to goalposts to make it more difficult for you to earn the same money. It can be a motivator but also depressing if you have a bad month. Also as far as I know commission isn't regarded as salary if you're applying for a mortgage as it's variable. It really depends on the person, some like it some don't.
