Audi A6

    Hi Lads,

Looking for a bit of advice here this time, Heading over to London next week to look for a car for the brother... He has an Audi A6 2013 in mind... we will be restricting our search to car giant in west London as we don’t have much time.

    http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Audi/A6/results-Audi-A6.asp

What sort of things should we be watching out for thinking something like the following:

    * Panel alignment & consistent colour on all exterior panels

    * Check for even tyre wear.

    * Check for Full service history - they have a few marked with TBA as the service history so will be avoiding them, as they say they cant verify the service history or indeed if it was ever been serviced.

    * Will aim for those with lower mileage anything < 30k.

    * Take it for a test drive ... check for anything unusual. This is quite limited as they only let you drive around an industrial estate.

Is there anything else that we should watch out for on the A6 2.0 TDi (2013) manual gearbox.

    Any help much appreciated.

I'd get the automatic rather than the manual.

The worst thing you can do is restrict yourself to one dealer or garage, if i was in west London and looking for a newish Audi i'd definitely be looking at these guys http://www.draytons.co.uk/results.php#

Auto over manual all day in the new A6.

I hear what ye are saying lads but looking online the main audi dealers are a good bit more expensive than car giant....

    http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Audi/A6/details-760674-Audi-A6.asp

This one looks quite good full Service History + Mileage is low.

He will be coming back to ireland in 7 months so buying now to qualify for the VRT exemption, hes working there 6 months already.... if i were him id push out to the new 151 A6 but he doesnt want to spend that much

The prices at Cargiant are all non negotiable and there's a £99 admin fee on each one, you could perhaps on a straight deal with an Audi dealer get 10% off depending on the dealer and car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭Galway_guy_33

tried a few over the phone this week little or even no movement with them.... i know its not the same as being there in person.. the price difference is quite a bit compare with CG... around £2300 - £2500 in most cases

To be fair ive only heard good reports re car giant which is strange as I believe it's 100 percent auction sourced cars. I guess they buy stuff from fleets etc that are pretty safe in terms of quality.

If it's the Multitronic CVT auto in the A6 then I'd choose the manual over it. If it's the newer S Tronic then auto all day.

recently bought a 2013 A6..its a UK spec import but bought here through a garage. went for the manual. had the choice of auto or manual but from reading reviews I read the auto on the audi is a CVT , reliability is not in question but auto not supposed to be as good as say the bmw or merc auto

everything else though is super. if you can afford s-line go for it.

meant to say, the Daytona grey pearl effect is gorgeous

also apart from the speedo, everything can be changed for km/h when he returns here

In fairness the multitronic has come on a lot. It has 8 ratios in S mode and is almost as fast as the S-Tronic..

Well I test drove one a few weeks back and found it unpleasant.

Was the s tronic always available or is that a new box? Is it more reliable than the other cvt?

S tronic only became available on front wheel drive models since late 2014 with the facelift afaik.

Looking at similar myself at the minute. That black one looks good value to me. Looking at autos myself and they are a bit more expensive.

    Hi lads.
Sorry to hijack this thread - happy to create a separate thread if mods wish.
I have been looking for some time at getting a 2012 A4 S Line but have also started looking at the A6 as well.

I am wondering specifically on peoples thoughts on the 2011 A6 2.0 TDI S Line 177bhp manual model.
Is there anything I should know about this model reliability-wise?

    It will probably come down to a choice between a 2012 A4 vs a 2011 A6.

    thanks

Can't comment on reliability, but I'd take an A6 over and A4 all day long.

I was just going to ask - did the A6 model change halfway through 2011?
    Or was it in 2012?

    Early 2011.

Sound thanks. I saw photos of two 2011 cars and they looked different.
    Newer model looks nicer.

Just as a matter of interest why would the automatic be recommended over the manual in the A6?

i have a september 2011 A6 and it's the older version so the new model came in between that date and December sometime

In this class and size of car an automatic gearbox is pretty much the norm, except with the A6 which seems to be bought more in manual than an equivalent BMW 5 Series or Merc E Class. However as I posted earlier in this thread, I wouldn't recommend the multitronic auto box which is only available in the front wheel drive A6, the S-Tronic or DSG was only made available in the 2014 onwards facelifted 2.0 TDi and if going for one of them then definitely automatic.

    Thanks for that bazz.
If going for an earlier year 2011 or 2012, you'd be more inclined to recommend the manual?

Personally yes, I test drove a multitronic A6 and didn't like the feel from the gearbox or the way it selected gears. I have a 5 Series auto which imo the auto is way superior to Audi's multitronic. Best thing to do though is test drive an example of each yourself and see which you prefer.

Possibly a silly question - but would there be any difference between a new shape 2011 A6 and a 2012 A6?
I assume they are the same?

Shouldn't be that early into a new model's lifespan, that model only got a facelift in mid 2014. You would have the same base specs - SE and S-Line then whatever the first owner ticked on the options list if any. UK specs tend to be that little bit better in that the SE and S-Line got Sat Nav as standard afaik. UK S-Line would have had leather seats as standard whereas Irish S-Line had half leather.

Yep they're the same. Only got a refresh for the 2015 model year I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭gaillimh

    Ah I see thanks lads.
For some reason I was under the impression that there were slight changes/improvements introduced to models every year in between the major overhaul models but it seems I have that wrong.

Just comparing two specific cars online (a 2011 & a 2012) and they seem to be basically the same to me.
So other than the fact that the 2012 for resale purposes is obviously a year newer - there would be no major additional reason to pick the 2012 over the 2011 (the 2011 has about 5k less miles on the clock and listed for £800 less)?

Thanks for your responses so far - appreciate it.
    I'm a nervous buyer 😀

I'm always a bit reluctant to buy a new model in the first year of it's production. Mainly due to my thinking that it's only been briefly on the market where customers may find bugs or small issues that were not discovered when the model was developed and that they revise/fix on later models.

Warranty would sort any issues out I would have thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Warranty doesn't cover every situation. Manufacturers make improvements to models all the time based on many things including feedback that may get from customers once the car is out in the wild. For example they may switch tyre brands or tyre sizes if they get enough feedback from customers that they have too much road noise. That would not be a warranty claim.

Another quick one lads on the Audi A6.
Just trying to get as accurate a figure for Vrt as possible.
The exact models I have been looking at are 177bhp s-lines.
On the Vrt calculator website the only 177bhp model I can see is an s-line quattro (which is not the model I'm looking at).
Any idea how I can get an accurate figure for the 177bhp model?

    Cheers

I just did one there on the VRT calculator and found it no bother. Just select model: "A6 2.0 TDI" and version: "S LINE 177PS 4DR"

Ah thanks ignore me I was being stupid.
    Cheers :-)

The vrt on similar year and similar emission A4's seems to be a few hundred higher. Thought the A6 would be more.

I'd get the automatic rather than the manual.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread but don't think there's any point creating a new one.

Why do people recommend auto over manual? Is it just for driver comfort or is it technical issues.

Going looking at a couple A5s and A6s at the weekend.

Driver comfort, you don't want to be slogging through gears when you have all the toys and comfort around you. I'd recommend driving both to get an idea of them.

Having just purchased a 2016 A6 SLine with auto, i would definitely recommend the auto, very relaxing and a pleasure to drive. This is my first motor with auto and i would find it hard to go back to manual

The wife and I own a 177bhp manual. I wish at the time we had bought an automatic, why? Given its size and refinement i think an automatic gearbox would only add to it. We bought ours from cargiant a few years back and it has given very little trouble, though main dealer servicing can be expensive.

    Thanks.

Only problem would be that automatics aren't as popular here so might be harder sell in a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

What year A6 are you looking at? 2.0 TDi I presume?

The pre facelifted front wheel driver versions all came with the older multitronic box which isn't that nice which is why it wasn't as popular. They introduced the S Tronic box with the facelift from around 2014 which is way superior to the multitronic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭Azatadine

Just bought a 132 reg S-line as well recently but in manual. Went for manual as I was thinking it might be easier to sell when that day comes.

Really comfortable car but there is one thing that bugs me....that damn transmission tunnel does limit legroom. Last few cars have been Accords and I do find the legroom MUCH tighter in the A6 but I guess I'll get used to it.

In this class of car these days 80-90% of all sales are automatic so id say the opposite. Selling a manual might harder in a few years.

While I don't have experience of the CVT in the a6, I do own a auris hybrid which uses the CVT. My experience of driving a CVT is that they tend to be a bit revvy, especially under harder driving. It doesn't bother me because when i drive i like to save fuel and so I try and keep the car in the economy range by not accelerating hard

Cheers, the Audi multitronic CVTs don't seem to get a great review on line. Seem to give trouble but hard to know.
