So I'm thinking about getting a new car either a Ford Focus st170 or a MK4 Golf GTi.

Which is better do you think?

About the golf there are two versions one with 150bhp and one with 180bhp, how can i spot the difference between them. Any problems with all three cars to watch out for?

Golfs of that era aren't as solid as you'd hope for and interiors can be rattly. They said the 1.8t is very strong and so is the gearbox. Other areas require plenty of servicing and you'd like to see lots of history. The 180bhp would be rare enough and would attract a premium.

Not sure about the 170 as I never had one but my experience of mk1 Focus's is that they're very reliable generally, better built than the Golf and handle better. Interior materials aren't great in terms of quality but at least they don't rattle.
