Anyone done the driving test with this school? I'm just wondering about the truck they use if it's a manual or an automatic, I failed today having issues with the splitter box
I contacted airport driving school and they said I would pass in their truck and sent me an info pack but the gear stick looks way different then a normal one

I did my artic with airport and found them extremely expensive and pushy about getting you as many lessons as possible, not sure what kind of gear stick is in the rigid in the artic was tiptronic,

I did my rigid with swilly drive, they were much better and cheaper and used a straight six small Mercedes truck,(this Was about 5 Years ago though so may have changed

    Where are you based?

I saw your other thread, and I believe the Actros has a 12-speed electronic powershift setup that's quite clever but allows the pilot to preselect gears and does the actual shift when the clutch is pressed. That wouldn't be unusual - it's not anything like as weird as an Eaton Twinsplit, for example. You should ring them and have a chat to discuss your concerns about manual vs. automatic. What problem are you having with the splitter, out of curiosity?

The problem I had yesterday was at a red light I would have it in 3rd gear (which is what I was trained) and when I go to move off the truck doesn't move, I was talking to a driver this morning and he was shocked I was trained to take off in 3rd gear that it should be 2nd gear

Were you taught to take off in third gear in that particular truck? I was personally trained to move off in second when empty in an old-ish Volvo, unless you're going up the side of a mountain. By "third" what do you mean exactly - third, or 2L with the splitter?

It's a 01 Scania so it's old enough, it's third gear as in number 3, he said I start in 3 turn in 4 and stop in 5 drive in 6
I currently work in a warehouse and was asking a number of truck drivers today and they all said to me 2nd gear if they are full or empty

Sounds like an odd sort of instructor.

There is another school based in Finglas a family run business,They don't gouge you for extra lessons etc unlike some other schools,It be best to do the test in a manual truck also.
I know from having drove the Mercs in the past there is no actual clutch pedal instead you can select either full auto or manual which means you just push the small lever forward or back for gear selection.

    [snipped]

I remember taking one truck lesson with them back in 2010 and had a very similar experience. They were very pushy with lessons and told me If I block booked 20 lessons I'd get one for free!? Told them I'd think about it and they were ringing me for days asking if I've decided what i'm doing!?

Told them basically to fcuk off and stop ringing me. Ended up finding a great instructor who ran his own school and passed first time after only 10 lessons. [snipped]

Unless things have changed in recent years, there's no requirement to use the splitter gears on a test. Just use the normal gears in the low/high box.
