Quantum Break: Master Edition

Quantum Break by Remedy Games has just been confirmed for PC and it launches the same day as the Xbox One version, 5 April.

    http://www.polygon.com/2016/2/11/10965480/quantum-break-xbox-one-pc-free-alan-wake-april-5

Alan Wake, Max Payne and Max Payne 2, are some of my favourite games of all time. I was disappointed to learn Remedy's new game, Quantum Break, was going to be an Xbox exclusive when it was announced two years ago, but I was willing to wait because of Alan Wake - Wake is considered one of the best ports ever done.

I will be picking this up (hopefully Collector's Edition) on launch day.

The only issue is that the game is confirmed for Windows 10. Awaiting clarification if it will also play on Win7 machines and if it will come to Steam.

Windows 10 only would suggest a DX12 requirement, but that would really limit them market wise.

Would it though? With DX12 supported by hardware based on Fermi and GCN upwards I would have assumed that would encompass most rigs which would be capable of running the game in the first place?

The Windows 10 requirement would arguably be more restrictive going by Steam Hardware Surveys with around 40% of users still using some version of Windows 7.

The DirectX 12 software components are only in Windows 10 though, it's not an issue of hardware support.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood you, the issue as far as I can see is ultimately the Windows 10 requirement because of the DX12 renderer, right?

I don't know that for a fact, but I believe it's inferred by them claiming that it's only for Win10.

Yep, it basically means the same thing. DX12 only means Windows 10 only. Windows 10 only means...well, what it says on the tin.

What I was getting at was the possibility of loosing sales due to people with Windows 10 but who didn't have a DX12 supported GPU, a demographic which I would imagine they're not particularly worried about.

It seems anyone who pre-orders on X-Box One, gets the Windows 10 version for free. Wonder if the PC release is more of a glorified pre-order incentive to push X-Box sales and Win10 adoption, instead of just simply selling a game.

And it does indeed require DX12, I found an offical spec sheet:

More rubbish minimum requirements....an i5-4460 is incomparably faster than an Fx-6300.

Then it states a 4790 as a recommended, 'or AMD equivalent'....even though there is no AMD equivalent. The i5-4460 listed as a minimum requirement is faster than the fastest AMD CPU in existence, the 9590, by a huge margin in almost all games.

Also the GTX760 is way faster than the R7 260X. I would honestly love to know who pulls these requirements out of their ass because they're getting more bizarre as time goes on.

Is there any bench marks for how AMD cpu's perform in DX12? Be interesting to see an actual DX12 game and how it performs on PC,this will be the first major DX12 release then?

According to Aaron Greenberg, (here) Quantum Break will not be coming to Steam. So, I guess we can take from this that Quantum Break will be a Windows 10 exclusive game.

Has anyone used GFWL 2.0? What's it like? I reckon Quantum Break will come to Steam eventually, possibly after a year or two, much like how Alan Wake did, and recently the new Tomb Raider (although that is Square Enix, whereas Quantum Break is owned by Microsoft).

Also, Remedy have come out and corrected their requirements for the game:

It locks games down to a sandbox type environment like a mobile app, so you can't access the game files, most overlays won't work like MSI afterburner and if rise of the tomb raider is anything to go by there's no exclusive full screen mode so no SLI or Crossfire, and for rise of the tomb raider patches are delayed vs Steam by ~4 days due to M$ certification. People also lost saves same as per GFWL
Its the same mistake all over again only worse

Once bitten, twice shy! I won't be going near anything that has "GFWL" attached to it, it's poisonous and broken and a guaranteed headache that no one needs. For all the giving out people do about UPlay, I've never had anything even remotely close to the stress with that that I've had with GFWL over the years. I was unable to play I don't know how many games because their services were broken.

    Quantum Break: Windows 10 Edition

Not gonna happen. Nice try, MC. It annoys me how much they hurt PC gaming despite having the OS most popular for it. Hope DX12 gets working on W7 or Linux eventually... somehow. Then maybe I'll still not play this XBone designed game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,835 ✭✭✭Falthyron

Yeah, the general consensus seems to be that GFWL 2.0. is an abomination. I guess I will wait for the Steam version to launch (hopefully) 6 - 12 months after April 5th.

A shame, but then again, MS own everything to do with Quantum Break so they can do what they want, even damage the game's chance at being a financial success on the PC platform.

They'll do that then when it flops they'll blame PC gamers and not bother releasing xbone exclusives on PC. This is pretty much Gears of War all over again

The really stupid thing that makes me go why is the fact that even if they took the profit cut by putting it on steam they would easily make a much larger profit on their game by the amount sold, no one will ever buy it on gfwl, whereas (quality taken into consideration) on steam it would sell bucket loads!

Its just a real head scratching business decision, they know gfwl has failed and steam is the go to PC gaming platform, so why?

To get Xboner players to use NSA 10 and shout about how great DX12 is to their friends over a cup of doritos.

Any gains from dx12 will be destroyed when you can't run the game exclusive full screen
