Moving Job in Small, Specialized Field

    Hi,

I intend to begin looking for another job soon having gained a few years of experience in my current position.

I work in a very small company that provides services to large companies in the industry.

I enjoy the role but feel that I am approaching the limits to what I can learn from it so I want to move upwards within the same sector.

While I get on well with my boss I think he'll take my plans to move quite badly.

The problem is that it's a fairly small field where a lot of people seem to know each other and I fear that there's a good chance of old friends and colleagues of my boss becoming aware of me considering moving to any company I get past first or second round interviews in.

In addition I'm not sure how to address the issue of references as the most relevant and important experience was gained in my current role but I can hardly put down my boss without clearing it with him.

Any advice on how best to handle the situation? I thought this would have come up before on the forum and had a look but couldn't find anything directly relevant.
