Drying cows off

    Have been feeding two cows nothing but hay last 4 days and dry cow tubed them last nite but noticed one has a good bag on her today ..was doing twice a day sucking as it was ...and the where sucked dry last nite before the tube ... Question is should I be worried or will the tube do it's job

    If she's not on grass she will dry off in a few days,it's not unusual for her to bag up a bit

    i had. The opinion that the tubes were just antibiotics and would not dry up the cow .

    Pretty much, they have a slow release antibiotic and also help seal up the teat. We never bother with them, just a bit of restricted diet. The cow will obviously still be producing milk but should go down in a day or two, wouldn't worry about it.

    I have dried off dairy cows doing over 20lts a day abruptly. No restriction on diet before or after. They'll be fine. Takes a couple of days for the message to get to the brain that they are on holidays now.
